With all these posts people will think my car is a turd. Its not, its just a few little niggles all coming at once!

I have just noticed my engine making this noise coming from under the rocker cover, at least that where it sounds like. Im afraid the pic and sound quality is shit but it gives an idea. Its that very obvious rattling you can hear at about 2000rpm.

Thank you anyone that knows!!!

Bet you have a snapped head bolt.

I would not run the engine till you have that rocker cover off.

It doesnt look like its missing or anything so dont chance any more damage!

good, I'll go and get it off and have a look and see what I can see. Will I see a bolt head lying around if this is the problem?

Mmmmmmm, well I've had the cover off and all looks well, everything glistening and not a loose item of any sort in there. I looked with a torch for a good 5 minutes and could see nothing lying anywhere....any more ideas??

Is it significant that the noise is only there at about 2000rpm?

Any more ideas about this as Im really worried about doing permanent or more expensive damage. I have to use the car at the moment but if its serious then I will just have to stop going out, or get a lift.....please help!

Do you feel confidant to check the valve clearances your self ?

May be one of the eccentrics/adjusters have slipped ?

This is just a guess though as it's hard to tell what it is with out being there.

take the cover off and idle wngine wihtout it. the oil will not spill much, just dont rev it. at the same time take silicone hose, about 2 m length, one end to your ear other end try to narrow down the area from which the strange sound is comming.

HOLY SHIT! This one has just been solved and I was SO close to it being bye bye m20!

The cambelt was so loose it was taken off without touching the tensioner; so the belt was slapping around making that noise. On top of that the bolt holding the crank pulley was falling off so there was virtually no valve timing. The garage was amazed the car was still running, hadn't a clue how it was though.

Its all sorted now though, just in time, a warning to everyone - CHECK YOUR CAM BELT ALL THE TIME!!!

Might just do that Si, Im guessing that it wasn't the original cambelt as its got 87000 on it now and it surely must have had one in between new and now. So whoever fitted the replacement was a proper cock jockey, shoddy workmanship is an understatement!
