The N47 replaced the M47 mid 2007

After jan 2009 they don't need a crank, just the guides, chains sprockets.

A lot of them will have been done under warranty or good will by now so you MUST check the warranty history on ANY potential BMW tha uses the N47 engine.

The N47 engine is a fantastic for its performance, economy, emissions and light weight.

Reliability wise it's very good too but the above issue is its one BIG chink in its armour which BMW have sorted with revised parts.

Nice oil pump sprocket phil!

Are there ANY supposedly premium quality cars built in the last 5-7 years that arent ticking timebombs ?

Its getting to the stage where buying anything over a grand is pointless :(

Ive been saying this for years i feel cars in general really went down hill in the mid 90's anything from the 00's just aint built as well. Its done on purpose obviously so make the turn around of new car purchases quicker.

These days the industry expects customers to by a new car every 2-3 years and build there cars accordingly

Its more to do with cost that.

An engineer will design something then the bean counters will change it so save money.

The reason why the crank need to be changed on the 2007-2009 N47 is because the sprocket is part of the crank. On most other engines is a separate part so to make it one part costs less.

The 1 Series is alright but has poor visibility, useless boot and rear legroom. As a daily the Golf 5 TDi is better.

Space V RWD... The Golf is pretty bland, but as Andy said, it's quite cramped.

Oddly, you'll get more kit in an Astra and a Focus will drive better than the golf, but both these cheaper options have lower quality interior finishes, moreso the Focus.

Astras eat timing chains and sprockets for breakfast! But then if you press sprockets out from sheet its pretty fookin obvious to me that it isnt going to last very long 8O

The mech from my local vaux dealer said they now recommend timing chain/sprockets replacement every 40k miles! But vauxhall are only charging £900 for this so its not that bad apparently

Cam belts FTW!
The Golf is a bit bland, but the 1 Series is the dullest, most characterless car BMW made. The E46 Compact was much nicer. A 130i is the only one worth considering.

Nah, the 125i, 123d, 130, and the 135i are all awesome!

The 123d is alot of fun. Had one as a courtesy car after a little accident in a company car a few years back. Its was very quick, especially for a diesel.

Not after you've had a four grand bill for rebuilding the engine! Lovely when they run, not when the N47 engine develops the timing chain problem.

Oh, the 1 series hatch is nowhere as impressive as my Subaru! We will have to park them next to each other and get a public vote! That's a public vote Barry.. not a bigoted vote!

I was talking about the looks not overall.

That rice turd of yours hit every branch of the ugly tree when it fell out!

And if you want an overall comparison,

1M vs butt ugly subaru?

No contest!

Barry, you've changed your tune, or not read my earlier post correctly!??

I love the 1M, but not in that colour though.

I would have looked at a 1M and an RS3 when I bought the Subaru, but they would have both cost me an extra £50 a week out of my pay packet though.. so a no brainer!

£50 a week sounds like a deal compared to the depreciation that will be in store for a turd that was so unloved here in the UK that Subaru gave up trying !

Here! I said put them side by side and have a public vote!.. you came back with a 1M coupe!?

My Subaru is faster around the ring than the 1M, in fact in 2010 it was the fastest 4 door production car of all time around the ring, so that's faster than the V10 M5 too.

No you said you subaru was more impressive than a 1 series hatch, not better looking so as you comparing what is more impressive, i compared a 1M.

Being the fastest is not everything.

I still don't think you have an argument! My Subaru is more impressive looking than any 1 series hatch! Fact!

Even the motoring press say the 135M is a pig to look at!
