The first J plate cab has facelift rear clusters, and the second H plate cab has pre-facelift rear clusters.
Facelift on the E30 was 1987/88, but the cab's still had some of the facelift feature's such as the ellipsoid lights at this point, but the rear lights didn't change for a while.

No older style lights are larger, or is that the other way around

Now I know that is wrong, my friend had a sport with the old style back lights and he bought some new style back lights and they did not fit because they were larger!

Nope!!! You have just shown a pre and post face-lift model which have different fitting bumpers, that is what makes them look bigger. I too have fitted face lift lights to a pre face lift car.
Ill go try my facelift ones on my M3 and report back later......

Don't talk absolute rubbish!
The newer lights and older lights are NOT transferable.
THEY ARE NOT THE SAME SIZE AT ALL!
The older style lights are for chrome bumper'd saloons, convertibles and ALL E30 M3's, while the later lights are for plastic bumper'd saloons, convertibles and ALL Tourings...
There.
Sorted.
Giles.

You sure? Face lift lights are approx 10mm taller than pre... I'm sure it's easy. If you count getting the angle grinder / welder / paint sprayer out as easy, that is.Falkster wrote:I too have fitted face lift lights to a pre face lift car.
