I've picked up a new rubber gasket off the stealers the other day as the old one on my car is looking perished and has a hole at the bottom.
Upon pulling the old one out, seems there is a sealant gum applied. Am I right in thinking that this is the same sort of sealant that goes around the rear light clusters?

Or is this just seam sealer from the connection of outer arch and bodywork, thats bonded to it over the years.
Basically, is it a good idea to put a sealant on the new gasket?

When I replaced my fuel filler gasket, there was no sealer around the old one.
Can see no reason to glue the gasket in,it's open to fresh air on the inside.

Cheers daimlerman. Just thought perhaps an idea to stop water getting in from around the cap and sitting between the metal and rubber and corroding..
Having said that I don't remember any sealer on the last car..

I've seen sealer used but only on knackered rubber gaskets. A good one should just sit in place fine, it's not going to get wet in there and if you're tah worried it's not hard to pop it off and dry it out should it be wet.

Yes I think it was about £15ish. They were knackered on both of my last E30's it's worth checking. Water can run down the filler neck and rot away..polsta wrote:do you mean the whole rubber bit that goes right around the fuel neck all inside the fuel flap ? how much was it
Kedge, you're right the new one fitted on nice and snug. Cheers

This was for my 325i Touring but I'm sure it wouldn't vary between models..
