No, Brian's talking about the crusty patch that's on the vertical part of your inner wing, top centre of pic. That's rusting through from the other side of your wheel arch, where there is a bracket holding on your fuel filler pipe.318isPMK wrote:Is that at the bottom of the pic? It isnt doing any harm is it?Brianmoooore wrote:Pic. also shows a large hole in the inner wing, opposite the tank filler pipe bracket!
You need to get that cut out and welded ASAP, because every time you drive in the wet it'll fling more water at that point, allowing it to trickle back into the boot pocket.

you have only scratched the surface there, that will be a big hole when your done poking,
and to make matters worse that's the inner/inner arch.. the outer inner arch will be extremely crumbly in comparison to that

At this point I'd suggest getting the wheel off on that corner of the car, and have a good poke with the screwdriver everywhere. Check the bottoms of the wheel arches on the inside, examine the underseal under the petrol flap, and check for corrosion around that snake-shaped metal plate that's covering the fuel tank breather hoses.
If you find more corrosion, you're going to have to pay through the nose to get it all dealt with, because the other side will be identical.

It is possible to repair such holes with fibreglass mat, in fact, arguably safer to do it that way, given the close proximity of the fuel tank.

people say their e30 is rust free, have never looked in such places and oblivious/denial to it, removed the wheel, fuel line neck thing etc etc, and started taking back the original factory sealant all round there, all looking lovely and nice still...yet surface rust was starting around the joins/lines and corners , luckily no holes or anything like that and was all taken right back and seen too , if lit was left undisturbed for another couple of years ....

with stuff like that, its hard to give any sort of accurate price by email, as it all depends on the extent and what you want done, as in the posts above- it needs the wheel and other bits under the arch removed, and all properly inspected right up inside, and if you want then all the sealant removed to properly inspect, then its whats found/needs doing or not, then all re sealed etc, things like that you just need to have someone you trust, just give it them and say "sort it" ring me when its all removed and inspected, and go from there

Little tip for the repair of this particular hole: weld the bracket for the filler pipe/liner to the repair patch before you weld the patch to the arch.
