The engine build is under way, dropped it off at Dans last week. Still waiting on a few parts but we've got most things together now. Took Schrick 2 weeks to eventually despatch the cam and springs, despite saying they'd done so the day they recieved the money from the dealer I'd used, apparently that kind of thing is common place since being taken over.

Anyway, the engine is now stripped down. Dan's suspects the noises I could hear were some heavily work eccentrics adjusters on the rockers so now a set of those are on their way. The only other thing he's found is some light scoring to the piston skirts, most likely a combination of poor oil a debris in the oil, these have been measured up and are still ok to use which is good news as it feels like I'm bring the country out of recession on my own at the moment

The head has been tested and is all good which is always a huge relief with these things. Pressure tested, re-faced, chemical cleaned, exhaust guides done, re-seated the valves and a vac test. Headwork is being kept to a minimum for the sake of reliability, all that we're going to do is get the the gaskets, head and manifold ports matched up to each other so there's no steps. If I feel the need I can get another head done to a lairy spec at a later date.

I'm also going to be going down the MAF conversion route, probably stick to the standard AFM until it goes for a proper mapping session though. Everyone knows about the Miller MAF conversion, however I wasn't keen and the price of it so I'd been looking into what parts could be used for a DI attempt when Mikey_Boy told me he'd got a Miller Gen III he wasn't using along with a BMC CDA airfilter so a price was agreed and that turned up the same day as the cam


Obviously I've seen the issues Si13 has had with his Schrick cam so I pulled it out the box to check and there is only the one slot in the end.

Got back in the garage today to crack on with the floor. After the discovery of the surface rust under the sound deadening in the drivers side footwell I tackled the passenger side.

I'd bought one of those oscillating multi tools before Xmas and that was perfect for getting under the sound deadening. However it turned out to be a pointless exercise as the passenger side was perfect so I only took up the front half, should've guessed since the drivers side pulled up by hand whereas the passenger side was still stuck solid.

This was 10mins work with the OMT.


Took a whole lot longer with more scraping and grinding to get to this so I've got a good surface to repaint.


Drivers side took a lot more work though, especially with the added trickery of the throttle pedal mount and stop. After much contortionism it got it to this standard.



Found I had to go quite a way up the bulkhead as well as despite looking fine this section had surface rust under the paint all the way up.


The floor has now been doused in Fertan as I won't get back on it until Monday at the earliest. I'll be fitting new plastic bungs but prior to that the the Waxoyl probe will be stuffed into the holes for a good soaking.

Ive not got a 2.5 now so wont be doing it, wish i had one as i'am curious to see if it would of worked.

Prehaps i should just drop a 325i auto engine and box into my touring

No worries, I'd not been on here for about a month either.

Now we know the Bosch part they use for GEN III I think you'd have got it working fine, much simpler than what you'd found regarding the erlier versions.

You must be bored of M40 auto power by now

All nuts and bolts Polsta, everything that is removable in the engine bay is pretty much covered on the wiki. You'll need basic kit, spanners, socket set and a jack to get the bits pictured above off. (The jack is for the engine so you can remove the mounts.

cool cheers jim, got all the tools bar a jack, il leave the mounts for now as engine will be comming after its taken off the road at end of the summer , but i want to do a bit of a bay refurb before this summer to bring it in tone with the rest of the car, shes going to be back soon, paint next week

Been very little activity since chopping the hole into the floor, been doing training courses and stacks of overtime while i've still got a job. Got a couple of hours on it this afternoon to build up the crossmember;



Just sent off what i hope to be the last parts request from Cotswolds for the underneath including E28 M5 engine mounts to try and shift the engine over enough so the steering linkage has more chance to clear the manifold, fingers crossed it works.

Has this worked. I'm close to selling my BTB2 so that I can run a club sport rack.

I'm a little confused though. How the hell have you managed to convince Dan to work on an M20?

I think you can order just the rear section of the BTB3 for about £400. I cant remember if you have to order a new balance section as well.

I've gone BTB3 Scott, I wasn't happy with the clearance being enough during spirited cornering on top of the fact it raised the engine so much, there was a thread somewhere with picks and a few people expressed reservations as to whether there was enough space.

The difference between BTB2 & BTB3 is the front section but it is £350 to £400 for just that section (can't remember exactly), since the BTB2 was free on a doner car I stumped up the cash but if it had to be one or the other the rack will give much more pleasure! I've got an ultra rare RD 6 Branch sat at home as well which won't clear the rack either

Already have one, they said I wouldn't need a new crossover pipe. The two systems shold be the same length but I've not had them side by side to confirm.

Little more progress on the floor today. Walked into find the Fertan had morphed in to a right horrible looking mess;



Followed the instructions and wiped it all down;



Wasn't sure that is was meant to be looking like, spoke to Matt as I'd knew he'd used it and neither of use were sure. I decided to get the heat gun into action to dry off the water and the Fertan just started turning to dust so with a quick wipe with a kitchen towel I was left with this;



It's now had a couple of cost of etch primer and then zinc primer.



Tomorrow I'll be cracking out the seam sealer and then hopefully get a couple of coats of paint down. The heat gun will be working over time again to take the chill out of the surfaces prior to paint and then to get it drying well.

Shouldn't zinc primer be directly in contact with the bare metal. There's no point to it otherwise.

You only do a light dusting with the etch primer, you're not after a full covering. I just wanted to use the etch to make sure everything on top had a good surface to bite into as I've found some primers need a little help.

Put the heat gun back into overdrive again today. This morning it was the turn of the seam sealer to get smeared into place and then left to set for a few hours after a few minutes under the gun. I took the decision to eep the pedal mount free of it though.


Then this afternoon on went the base coat and then lacquered. Luckily Polaris silver matches cheap wheel silver quite well (pics aren't great as I was running out of light).





Just waiting on some more sound deadening to finish off the floor then just need to run in the stereo wiring before getting the carpet down.
