Not a lot to be honest. BMW did a pretty good job 20 years ago of developing it to produce a good amount of power. I think it's Brianmoooooore who said ' they were built by engineers not accountants'. In short, they didn't cut costs and make it slower for the sake of it.

Give it a good service, get the injectors cleaned and serviced and enjoy it as it is. Any money spent on shiny performance engine bitz will be money wasted. You're better off spending the money on new bushes. wishbones, drop links; stuff like that.

You can turbo the M40 as they run low enough compression. There was a turbo 318i cab around my area, I think it was running around 170bhp on a fairly standard engine - I think some new headbolts and Megasquirt were the only changes (other than the obvious manifold/turbo etc etc).
But that's only up to 325i levels, and it will almost certainly be cheaper to M20 or even M50 the car. Not sure which would be cheaper to run though :?

if your hell bent on getting a zorst, filter and chip then jetex do one for the 318i at about £200 simota do a carbon airbox for it at £170 and ant or speedtouch on here do a chip for it i think thats gonna be about 80 quid. you could then put a cat or kent larey cam in it for about 250 BUT you could put an m42 318is twin cam or m20b25 in there for less than that lot and have more POWERRRRR but if its the modification to your car you enjoy then go with the expensive option ;) hope this helps

Yup, just make sure everything is as it should be, have a look through the wiki and do preventative maintenance and enjoy the ride!
