If you type "BMW E30" in Google, you get a list of 10 sites. Ours isn't on there and I'd like to know how I can get the zone on the first page when you type "BMW E30" into Google?
Anyone got any ideas?

Weird...I tried this the other night, and was suprised that it didn't come up as well, if you type in e30zone it comes up though, but for people that know nothing of the zone, only the E30, then it needs to work for them too.

That's just what I was thinking. If I'd just bought my first E30, the first thing I'd do would be go to Google and type in "BMW E30" we need to be in the first 3 links that come up.Simon wrote:Weird...I tried this the other night, and was suprised that it didn't come up as well, if you type in e30zone it comes up though, but for people that know nothing of the zone, only the E30, then it needs to work for them too.

Just had a little read, and you've got to pay for that service, it's called ad related, if somone types something into google, then it will throw relevant sites up for the people that have paid.

Aren't meta tags relevant Adam? (Don't know much about it, but I was offered the chance to choose some for my hobby site.)
Also, would it help if everyone searched Google and hit on the zone link before any other offerings?

Adam,
You NEED to speak to Ste.
He can do web hosting and knows all about this sort of thing. It's what he does for a living.
I gave him your number the other night, but if he hasn't contacted you, send him an e-mail.
Ian.

I'm no expert, but...
All search engines have their own way of prioritising the rankings of web sites.
Google i understand loves links to other sites...
Also i think the fact that the e30zone is written in .php doesn't help... maybe .htm takes priority over .php???
If i have any other mind boggling thoughts i'll post 'em up

Ian, have you got Ste's email address?
I need to contact him about hosting up the zone and also to discuss this matter.
I'm thinking about starting a new website which I'll need creating for me and also hosting. Still a lot of work involved yet but I'm thinking about starting an online business.

Not necessarily true, a web site of mine is at the top. And i can assure you i have never paid a penny to anyone to promote it...m3ben05 wrote:The first links on google have paid to be there, you can use meta data to move it up the order, but you need to pay to be at the top, thats how search engines make money
Looking at the keywords, there isn't a mention of BMW, E30 etc, it just promotes PHP & other geeky things

i don't think google works on your meta tags for your site (at least for prioritizing sites).
I read about the google method a little while ago, it was briefly mentioned in this thread, but what they do is rank the site base don how many other sites link to it. The example i saw given was when a lot of bloggers mentioned a site in their journals, as a test, and lo and behold it became number 1....
so, to get the zone up there, you need lots of other places to link to it.

Like Mark said, I have also been told that often links to other sites are looked for. Also having the word e30 in as many places as possible is good, ie name the images with e30 etc.

Thought Google specifically, looks at how many other pages containing the search term link to your site and decides that it must be relevant on that basis.
For example, I've not paid Google anything, but if you type GT6 into google, my page comes up 2nd in the list as there are links to it all over the world it seems!
Same with my mate's site for the Mi16Turbo: If you type in Mi16, he comes up first.
Perhaps it's time to go around shamelessly promoting the Zone
On the other hand I could well have grabbed the wrong end of the stick

this is going to sound silly but i have heard you can get it up on the first page if you have the right keywords: when you type in the E30 zone this is what comes up:
After a long long wait, we finally have the launch of the E30zone shop. ... Due to the fact that this site is a public forum, E30Zone can not be held ...
Google seems to take certain text from websites or forums from main pages to create a link, if somehow you could change this particular text where ever it is located on the site/forum to say
BMW E30, m3, 325, 316, forum, community and so on you should get up there, only what i have heard

This is a bit of a black art - but you should be able to improve massively.
Links - are important because thats how pagerank decides if your page is relevant to the search. (Because links have been placed by a human to a relevant page)
Meta tags - are important because the search engines like to compare the content of the page with the meta tags to see how accurate the description is.
If for some reason you had Jaguar in the meta tags you'd not score very highly on this site because the term Jaguar does not appear much on the pages. BMW will tho, although you might want to the try some longer and less generic words.
The google pagerank system is outlined here
http://www.google.com/technology/
as a little google hack you can try using the search term "link:" in a google search. So, link:http://www.e30zone.co.uk in google will show you every link that google knows about to the e30 zone. The results are pretty shocking. There's a whole list from deviant forums which don't seem to have any relevance and just one other site which has you ranked at 160 odd on their list of top BMW sites.
One thing you could try is posting on other BMW forums with a link to this site in your sig - but that might not be too popular with rival site owners
Oh, and its just occurred to me - having the forums open to registered users only is probably going to knacker you because google won't be able to search the pages and index them. Making some or all of the forums public would probably shoot you up the list in a few weeks. If you type something like LSD 3.64 into google you get quite a few forum results but none from the E30zone.
btw, E30zone IS very hard to find. I owned a 318 Touring for 2 years before I found this place. I was looking for tech info and found you on a link from another bmw site. Google knew nothing about you. This is pretty bad since I work in front of a computer every day and spend a good amount of time on the net. If it took me 2 years, you can bet that you're missing a lot of potential traffic. I'm pretty sure that if you made some forums public you'd show up when people are looking for answers.
