I've been wanting to rent a space to work on my E30's since the summer. I've looked loosely for a while, but since deciding to give up the hire of a desk space for work come February, I'm going to free up some cash and would really like to put some of it back into a workshop/unit of some sort.

I have an 2dr that I want to strip, weld and rebuild. I'm in no rush so would be looking for somewhere on a long term basis. Ideally it would be great to be a space on a farm where its out of the way a bit. So I can curse and swear without upsetting anyone :D

I've looked on gumtree, the odd thing comes up but its mostly tightly spaced garages, with no power and really only suitable for storing a car.

I've got in touch with my local council but they weren't a lot of help.

Was wondering if anyone has any ideas or websites that might help, or if anyone knows anything available, I'm happy to share.

Ideally it would be good to be located in the West Hertfordshire area..

:D

I would love to, but its not feasible. Have just moved into my girlfriends flat which she owns, its a big house converted into 5 flats. One of the neighbours owns a garage on the property, which at a squeeze could work. I'm temped to offer to buy/rent it off them but doubt they'll take me up on the offer..

Be serious.... I can hardly see a rotten E30 up the corner of a kwikfit workshop spread out into a thousand pieces going down well when the regional manager comes round for a look :)

I would be driving round your local farms/warehouses and having a word, keep to the private places out the way of the public

Im also looking for some space to carry out a conversion on my car, been looking at this site and its all done online once payment is sent they just give you a combination code for the lockup. Unfortunately for me most of the lock ups around london are tiny :(

Yeah I don't think I'm going to get it done in a sunday too..

I've been looking at a few farms and small private-ish industrial estates to check out, I think you're right with that approach..

Cheers..

I was looking on this website the other day, but again all I could find was tiny (good for storing a car only) garages.

NW London isn't too far from my part of Hertfordshire, would you be interested in a possible share as an option, should somewhere suitable arise winkeye

Count me in if three's a crowd.. Funny enough I was talking to my mate the other day regarding this . But as BMW_e30vert said around were I live in NW London the garages are tiny.

If you find anything and you want a third person to split the rent let me know as it might be willing

I wouldn't even walk past my local quick fit in the fear of catching something nasty. Complete bunch of ***s!

And how do you think their insurance would fair if the car you were welding went up in flames and took their premesis with it? :?

G Bear. As above, check out local farms that are using space to set up rentable unitss. Loads are at it but make sure they accept working on cars. Theres a lot of worry about envioromental waste etc. You'll need insurance as well ideally especially when welding.

Cheers B7. Yep I was certainly going to set out my wants of the space (welding mainly and making a fair bit of noise from cutting and hammering etc), more for them so they knew exactly what I was intending to do. Plus I haven't done alot of welding yet :? so shall probably be burning and blowing holes more than anything to begin with..

sag, vert, shall definitely keep you both posted, might be nice to have some company whilst finding more rot as I go hunting..

Have a butchers on Right Move and Zoopla for Commercial properties, they often have garages/lockups for rent and they don't tend to be extortionate costs either.

I'll be looking for a decent sized lockup with water, electric and maybe gas in around 8 months - 1 year so me and a mate can work on our cars in the dry with loads of space.

I'll be looking in the Bristol area though, but do keep this thread updated with what you find. It'll be a good guide for others looking to do the same I expect.

^^Thanks FinalD. Will definitely keep it updated.

Just had a look on those two websites..

This is could almost work, nice that the storage bit is separate, but I just think the working space would be a tad too tight with a car in there. At a good price mind..

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/commercial-p ... 11488.html

Found this one the other day. Would be ideal if anyone had a bit of cash spare!! Could even rent a few spaces out for parking..

That first link

You'll just about squeeze your car in there if you are lucky (i doubt you will) and if you do there will be no space to work on it

just go round local places, ask about, not sure how they found it but a cple of mates of mine share a unit on a farm, think its £250 a month rent- £125 each , they can fit about 5 cars in it, theyve put a ramp and a spray booth and all sorts, quiet out the way and secure

I know this is not local to the op, but I have been looking into this myself and looks quite reasonably priced, any opinions?

He could be right. My local Tesco let me do an engine swap by the cold meats section. Handy for a pate luncheon break.

you have to be careful when putting a ramp in premises that is just for hobbies as it could get classed as a business and then your rates shoot up .....

Thats looks more like a set up where you hire the place for a week.. But handy to have access to a ramp.

Good point about the rates issue bigred. But surely if you're using it for non business purposes they can't sting you.
