Zoners you may or may not be aware of the Law which has changed and taken effect from Feb 2012.

It has just come to my notice now, that the Law states Vehicles have to be insured and taxed at all times.

Prior to the changes one would be allowed to tax their vehicle and then only insure it on the days they would like to drive the vehicle. For example enthusiast meets and shows and or just selected days throughout the year as and when you please.

But now you have to be taxed and insured 365 days a year and it is the only way to be insured legally and or if you are not using it then you would have to declare it of road (SORN).

I presume they are trying to track down on youngsters causing havoc on the streets but and causing every insurance to rise in their premium.

It is now a Legal requirement for your vehicle to be insured at all times unless it has been declared off the road. As the registered keeper you are responsible for this.

Failure to this would result in a fine of a min amount of £100.

Do you guys have any more information on this and what is your take on this?

Been in practise for a while now.

The idea works, but i'm guessing the only people this effects are the average joe who has forgot to renew one of the other or was unaware and his car is on his drive.
The ones who drive away without insurance or tax will continue to do so regardless of what the laws says.

Its not hard to sorn a vehicle though so its hardly a hassle.

old news mate and sadly it is your responsibility to know this law as a car owner/driver. Ignorance is not accepted as an excuse. It is so they can find uninsured drivers without having to physically go out with the ANPR camera. If you are insured you have nothing to worry about, same if your car is SORN.

However if you tax it for a year and on't drive it between Oct and Feb so you pull the insurance to save some coin over xmas and leave it taxed you are screwed even if your car doesn't leave the garage the whole time!

You have all the uninsured pr1cks out there to thank for it :)

Its pretty sad really as all this results in one not being able to insure as and when through the year, it becomes a little pickle if you do not own any land to which you can park your car on i.e drive garage or a lock up someplace.

I guess this has a harsh effects on all the classic car owners/drivers who only insure their cars to drive to events and shows/meets through the year.

Guys our Driving laws are becoming more and more harsh a sad reality trying ever so hard to cream as much pennies as possible. As i am sure most of us who live and drive in London can assure you all that the pot hole count has gone through the skys.

There's been no change at all for someone with no private land. If you can't get the car off of public property, then it always has to have been taxed, MOT'd and insured at all times.
The change is that for a car on private property, you can no longer let the insurance lapse and still keep it taxed, but why should anyone want to, when whole months of tax are refundable for exactly what you paid for them?
A far more annoying change that's been made relatively recently is that you can't get a refund on any remaining tax on a car you buy until the V5C is transferred to your name.

The Swansea scammers strike again. Another recent change is on new V5 docs there is no box to tick stating you have scrapped the car, you have to obtain a destruction certificate from "an authorised recycling facility" and post it with an accompanying letter. How f0oking ridiculous, anybody with a brain knows this will result in tens of thousands of extra cars/number plates remaining permanently sorned forevermore a men :)

Apparently there's been a massive increase in the permanent export of old vehicles though.

I SORN the cabbie at the end of October but leave the insurance alone, seems hardly worth the hassle of changing the policy to just storage. At least this way the thing is still covered if the garage roof falls in,or catches fire whilst I'm working on it.

Problem is, you would have to remember each year to SORN the car, or theres another crime commited, punishable by death.

If you "permanently" exported a car, so it no longer appeared on DVLA books, wonder what the problems would be to "import" it again, if you wanted to?

with the cut backs road traffic police data bases are not updated. they only update them now every 3 months due to the cost from the DVLA and in the new year every 6 months. whats the point paying the DVLA over £5m every 3 months (thats just the MET) then its all logged MOT,TAX.. with out one or the other you can't drive your car on the road with all the big bro cams about.

If its on a SORN and off road your ok

I had a fine for failing to notify of a car being scrapped, went to pay it on the last day and they were on strike , the bandits then refused to let me pay at the reduced rate because it had gone past the deadline, took the pee

Prison, is the answer, not fines and bans they don't pay or give a fook about coz they'll never drive legal, if they started to lock them up, it would put the fear in to kids etc and soon cut a lot of it out , as a large majority of persistent driving offence commiters are probably not prison regular types, driving and fuel costs are a joke

It's all going computerised they just print the page out, which prob is also more to do with fake mot cowboys etc , so you no longer get sent a wad of mot slips its all online for then to fill in

But in the long term it would soon make idiots think twice about persistent driving offences, they only do it because no real punishment, what's another ban if these never drive legal in the last 10 years n wouldn't ever be able to get insured anyway because of their driving history of offences , it's just a dodo on the wrist every time, even them socking examples of drink drivers of no insurance drivers killing people taking lived don't get locked up its unreal

You think that the hood rats give a flying fook about being
banged up in a nice cosy cell these days :?:

3 square meals a day, playstations, tv's, get to wear their own clothes, they aren't even woken up now, they are supplied with an alarm clock to set themselves.
You only have to look at the number of youngsters that re offend
after being released from Prison to realise that it doesn't work
as a deterent.

If the car is non existent just "sell" it to a made up character and job done.

Season greetings ...

i think our laws are just a tad to easy, they sure need to tighten up and enforce more firm and stricter rules.

As far as the law is concerned i presume it is all just a child's game play. They try ever so hard in their efforts to stop and track down irresponsible youngsters and when they do they have no real effective punishment in place for them.

These young individuals see that and then think to themselves well lets give this a go why:

1. im with friends
2. its a thrill factor
3. im cool
4. best thing about it, its free fun and i wont get int to much trouble.

All this results in the law being more confused as ever, frustrated to a point where they cant seem to think straight anymore so they then make large changes which effects the majority regular law abiding citizens.

The Laws in my eyes seem far to simple having no real effect on the individual committing these silly stupid careless crimes.

I am am from an era where if one did wrong one would get a beating for it, however the love and affection from family would keep us on a straight good path.... but now in today's times there is no or little love within families and friends which just results in careless youngsters being bought up.

it sure is an interesting topic however i guess a balanced blame should be to the law and to these youngsters/parents.

The law should work on effective strategies both on the parents and children and the parents well should just manner their kids effectively to live safely and respectfully within society.

of course not, we all know your right, BUT im not on about them in out of prison types, i bet a large percentage of persistent driving offenders have never been banged up, them 40-60 year old "never had a licence never will" types, peristent drink drivers etc, never do any other more serious crime as such, hence never get locked up, they should start locking them sort up and really clamp down

the average proper little criminal prison toe rag, would more joy ride and ditch, or not bother with a car, due to the police on the roads, stick more to robbing and stealing from their own areas than driving around everywhere un insured all the time or live in city areas they dont need cars, mr i dont give a f**k about another ban or fine for the 50th time il drive around all day in this £150 banger, il just go buy another one, is a more different type of offender
