Had a nice surprise yesterday.
Started the car up and whilst fitting stereo face heard a noise from air vents, thought it was leaves or something. Opened the bonnet and had a small geezer spraying water in my face, lovely.
Close inspection showed the fan had been grazing the pump to therm hose over some time and finnaly broke through. Then noticed one of the fins missing from the fan.
Got a new hose today and fitted tonight (much tighter fir near head than old one) then removed radiator and started to take fan off and noticed there is a fair bit of play on the coupling, maybe 4-5mm.
Just wondered if this is normal or is it that it has not been tightened right as I beleive you need a special 32mm spanner to do this.

Sounds like the water pump shaft is gone.

the hose is supposed to be clipped to the engine to stop it getting into the fan. The bme clip tends to have failed due to age, a couple of cable ties around the hose to the lifting point on the engine will do the job.
this is a problem even without the wobbly fan.
