My current 2 door has a glass sunroof and it's occured to me that I don't often see these on other peeps cars. Is it rare or just a chromie rather than facelift thing... or what? Think I like it better than the metal ones I've had before.

Will get some sorted. Wouldn't want to get too excited in case it's a Britax spesh! Seems factory though and it's got the correct interior colour, vented sliding cover panel inside .... ifyaknowharramean.

IIRC the OE 'moonroofs' were not factory fitted to E30s but an aftermarket kit made by ASC (American sunroof corporation) that could be retrofitted in place of the standard steel sunroof.
More common in the US , very few over this side of the water.

Thanks Pete. I'll check tonight for makers names, part numbers etc. and report back. Does look cool though regardless of anything else.

Nipped out to the work carpark for a look. It's certainly not factory - makers name is Rockwell Golde gmBh - so German presumably. A bit of Googling suggests that Rockwell Golde supplied components to ASC in the US. Have a banana Pete...

Yeah, think it is. More research reveals that it's an OEM dealer fitted upgrade. Lovely!

We need pics of the rare morsel !
Any numbers on the panel would be good as well. I recall reading many years ago that the panel was also used on the Saab 9000, though I could be completely wrong.

My 528i back in 1985 had a factory electric glass roof , dont recall seeing any others at the time. So must be like hens teeth on E30.

Pete - the Saab panel was a replacement option for the E28 not E30.
Pics will be forthcoming as soon as poss. Patience, child!
Sweep - stop raining on my OEM parade. Britax might do for the aftermarket cupholder crowd but I'm above all that now

The E23 / E28 moonroof was definately a factory option, I have a few turds here with them. The The E30 and E34 moonroof could be bought as a dealer retrofit kit but I have never seen any BMW info on the E30 one, just the E34.

They were offered through the dealer accessory catalog. I thought they were all made by Webasto. Rare, here in the US as well.

Back and forth, up and down. Same functionality as a standard metal one - it slides into the roof aperture (is that the word?) not up and over and not pop out. That's why I think the earlier comment about it only being an accessory for non-sunroof cars is wrong. It seems a direct replacement for a steel roof.

They seem to be more common on UK E28s than E30s, I know of quite a few E28s with them in.

That's a very handsome E28 there Mark - will definitely get hold of one soon before they start to go up up and away.
I think pete said earlier that glass was a factory option on the E28 but a dealer option (ie retro fitted on the E30).

Thanks Nick. Yes, that would explain it then... I did consider getting one for mine, but it has a manual roof so it's not worth the faff for me.
