This literally just happened after I changed the alternator, there was a rock that was on the road whilst I was driving and looked like it had broken of the wall, its like a cobblestone sort of wall, so old rocks etc...
Lieing in the middle of the road it cracked my sump, could I claim public liability? Is it worth it...I am defo not going to insurance as it would just boost my claim, and today is the last day my insurance expires too..
Anybody else having bad days?

It's probably quite expensive if you won't tackle it yourself. Replacement sump, labour, oil, gaskets etc. If you do, it's still probably £75.

Yeah I can do it not a problem, but just asking about the probability of the liability form, I guess that depends on the council.

Is it an m40/m42 you have?
It looks like the sumps on these are far easier to change than the sump of an m50/m52 in an e30. Would never want to change the sump in an m50 e30

Get a sump guard on it dude. Mine has scraped along the ground many, many, many times
Better than replacing sumps and other possible damages.

yeah true i will be sure to order one soon, it has essentially cost me the price of a guard now since I am on my 3rd sump. not bad though being said ive had the car over 4 years and its pretty low.

Only got yourself to blame then, Tanveer, on two counts - low rider, and not going around the rock...!

Totally agree mate but couldnt dodge as there was fast moving traffic, the road was a 40mph, so in a way if i could dodge i would have, done it many times..nevertheless.

If you claim, you are contributing to your council tax increasing and more services being withdrawn over time. I appreciate if you'd suffered major damage you couldn't easily repair yourself, but we need to consider that if both the government and citizens squeeze public services, we get worse services for higher premiums.

Yeah I know what you mean. First off i'm a student and i'm not paying council tax as i'm exempt from it.
Secondly I think that costs in general are going up, so its inevitable for prices to rise considering this economic climate.
Thirdly if the council checked their ancient cobblstoned walls I think they wouldn't have to deal with these problems in the first place.
Clearly a poorly managed wall has not been looked after or maintained now some of it lies on the road. Not my fault given moving traffic wasn't helping wither as i would have dodged like i have before in similar situations.

I doubt very much that you will have a successful claim.
Do you have any photos, evidence where the stone/rock/piece of wall was from?
It could have been kicked onto the road by kids, hit by other road users that knocked it into the path of your car
Your car is lowered, car in non standard form (ie lower then oe spec) they will more then likely palm you off with that.
If I worked for the council I certainly wouldnt allow a pay out for a claim like this
Also 'ancient cobbled walls' cant simply be maintained like a normal brick wall due to varying laws and rules (if it as old as you make out!)

yeah thats what i was thinking but, i reported the problem anyways and they will have someone inspect the broken wall and rocks on footpath and pavements, just wondering if anybody had a success with it..
I guess only in extreme cases like a hole in the road. Never mind Ill just replace the sump and buy a sump guard. Probably cost me less that the fact of going through all this claim bullshit. Lady on the phone was snobbish too so kinda had the feeling from then.
Cheers for the input guys. should be on the road soon.

My advice is Raise your engine when you put an m50 in job jobbed

. Mine sits just above subframe , and ive mounted a roundabout and only minimal scrapes .

Sorry but yeah bad luck and all that, sorry to hear yet another sump destroyed but seriously, you run a 60mm drop and have already done two sumps- did it not occur to you to fit a sump guard when it was dropped initially given the regular stories of sumps?

And don't raise the engine as BATTS recommended, you will be raising the heaviest part of the car up raising the center of gravity as well as putting the prop out of alignment.

yeah i thought there would be something linked with raising the car and alignment being tampered with as well..
Im not gonna claim anyways, being that the car is lowered although it does sound like I have a chance, but to haggle with them, clearly i dont have the time specially in my last year of study.
change the sump, and xmas prezzie for my self will be a guard. lol.
