I suppose you could try, only damage would be a dented sump, nothing serious.

On the exhaust side you can just about get a trolley jack in and on the mount (arm) itself.

If your gonna do the block of wood on the sump make sure the piece of wood is as big as possible to spread the load, you will notice it will start to lift the passenger side first though.

In you shoes if you want to keep the mount arms you got then space the existing rubber mount up till your happy with the clearance, take it off and measure what the height is and go from there.

Just make sure you do it so it's about 5mm clear of the rack when complete, not too much.

Ok so got some new mounts today and just fitted them now, got a bit fiddly but was doable. To be honest it's totally changed how the car drives. I really hadn't realized how bad the transmitted vibrations were.!!

I hadn't noticed but with those old mounts the engine also sat at a funny angle. Luckily I didn't have to use washers as spacers the new mounts were big enough. The clearance between the rack and sump is now 10mm.

Again thanks for all your help fellas..!!!

Unfortunaty no Lee! It's stopped all knocking and rattling except for when I turn it off and it make that damn last rattle. Hmmm strumped on that one...

My local BMW indie is going to get it up on the lift Monday morning see if he can figure it out. If he does figure it out ill decide if I fix it or not depending on his price....

It's not the gearbox Rav, it rattles even when clutch is dipped. It's something else.! If it were a mechanical engine problem then it would sound like that rattle constantly surely.

I changed the gearbox oil on Sunday, gearbox is lovely.!

The rattle must be related to the engine as is judders when shutting off.

Is it definitely not a dual mass flywheel fitted to your car? You said earlier in your thread you think it is a single mass one

To be honest Jer, I'm not 100% sure.! How can I tell?

Whats your thinking here, it might have a dual mass flywheel with a broken spring?

Unless there is a little inspection point in the bellhousing which I'm pretty sure there isn't, you have to take the box off to check :( If it is an e34 (and e32 I think?) engine they were all fitted with a dualmass as standard

My brothers work van had a dodgy dualmass flywheel, made a light knocking/pinging sound on tickover, and when you turned the engine off it made a strange little rattling sound. Also you felt a vibration up through the clutch pedal when pressing it

Ok so just took it to my local BMW indy for them to raise it up and have a listen, they have no idea what it is. It's not coming from the gearbox or flywheel area, more around the bottom end area. Surely if it were a bottom end issue the car would constantly make that rattle, my brothers Supra had a rod bearing go and the make a clunk on every crank revolution. My engine running is smooth.

He drove the car and thought the engine, gearbox and clutch were all great and had no issues what so ever. No noise or knocks at all from the engine... He reckons I'd be better living with it, and it it gets worse then it might be easier to pinpoint what it is, but he doesn't see it as an issue.

Any thoughts guys?

Maybe its gearbox mounts or gearbox suspension bush? I think i'll try taking the weight off the gearbox with a floor jack and try it....

Could be worth checking that the gearbox has the right grade of oil and the correct amount in it.

Yeah already did that, dumped the old stuff that looked like a grey liquid metallic milkshake and replaced it with ATF. Took about 1.1 - 1.3 liters. Shifts lovely especially with all new shifter bushes.

The more I read about it online and watch videos the more I think it's the dual mass flywheel is worn or has broken springs and has excessive play between the 2 masses. My theory is that as the crankshaft comes to a stop the secondary mass rotates back and forth as the springs no longer keep it snug thus only rattling when the engine is shut off.

Question is shall I fit a single mass wheel? Or go with another dual mass? What are the pros and cons of both?

Definitely fit a single mass flywheel if you are taking it apart. You wouldn't believe the difference in weight. Only downside is I'm pretty sure the clutches are more expensive for a single mass flywheel

I'm not really looking for performance to be honest, more comfort as its plenty fast as it is.

You can't use the same clutch for single/duel mass flywheels?

The dualmass flywheel clutch has it's springs in the flywheel, so the friction plate doesn't have any springs in. Even if it would fitted it would be horrible to use with no springs in the plate.

If you aren't worried about upgrades then there should be a few good dualmass flywheels about
