Falkens are quite a hard compound and less likely to grip when cold,
i had a shocking experience in an S50'd M3 last year when they let go at 70mph on the motorway

452's and 912's are soft.

I managed 16,000 miles on the e39 with some 912's

The older tyres like the 512's now they were shite in the rain.

For what they are and the price falken & toyos are spot on. But on bigger, heavier more powerful car I'd go with a premium tyre.
Next set of boots for the e39 will be from from one of the big 6's tyre types
Michelin , continental, Pirelli, Dunlop, Goodyear or Bridgestone

whats the views on best "premium" rubber in 255/55/15 for a 325i, weighing up price/quality/durability and finding the right balance, shame the conti contact are not available in the size

ive got a decent near new set of p6000s in my garage ive accumilated, and a couple of near new kumhos, and some others, but i will be buying a new set of rubber, probably move the p6000s on

I forgot to add that my car is running an m52 and I do need the grip and handling. Hence not liking the ze912 in comparison to the pe2's that is. If I didn't have the Michelins I would be quite happy with the falkens.

What size are you guys running in the sport contact 2's as I couldn't find any in 205 50 15.

whos running 255/55/15? If you mean 205/50/15, then take a look here:

http://www.camskill.co.uk/m53b0s93p0/Ca ... _205_50R15

They have the continental and the falkens.
I don't know why lots of people rate the t1rs

isnt 205/55/15 the oem size for e30s ?

but they have the contis for £84 a corner, so all in with delivery, fitting, valves, balancing etc your talking £400, good year eagle around the same

http://www.camskill.co.uk/m53b0s289p0/C ... _205_55R15

£56 for the falkens, or what are the uniroyal like for £65 ?

Mid range road tyre - I think Marangoni are some subsidiary of Pirelli. Nevertheless I have noticed that this tyre seems quite popular amongst hillclimbers & track day guys and it is used as a control tyre in a couple of race series. Pretty affordable but available in limited sizes.

As said - good in the dry, awful in the wet. Last for ages.

Just about the worst combination on an E30 then.

I'm going to recommend Kumho Ecsta Spt KU31s. Very decent tyre for the price, had them on the cabriolet for the last couple of years. Driven in plenty of terrible conditions and found them to be predictable, grippy and long lasting. Not too shabby in the snow either!

I've heard that they are stopping production of these in favour of a new model (KU39 iirc).

Worth a look imo.

Another vote for the Kumho KU31 here. I've got them on E46 and E30, they've done well. The E46 has had them for 30,000 miles and the rears are about done (2-3mm remaining).

edit: after a prod around the usual tyre sites, the KU39 is getting good ratings but the Hankook Evo K110 seems to be getting even better ratings and is quieter by 6dB. I'm not normally a brand snob, but can I fit a tyre called Hankook?? Kumho was bad enough but at least they had an E30 race series.

A bit late to this i know but i have been impressed by the new offerings from maxxis.
I have been running the maZ4 in 205/50/15 for about 14 months now in all conditions and have found them pretty good for grip, in terms of wear they just need swapping side to side soon, (most would have needed it a few months back before the cold set in) and have found most importantly that they are very predictable on the limit, which for a road tyre is more important than ultimate grip.

Mine is a cab. I'll be running 205/55/15's . Obviously, with a cab, I'm not planning on running things on the limits. I'm more interested in comfort, however, I am also a bit of a brand snob (sorry!) but realise that this doesn't equate to the best performance verses price.

Tyres are not likely to be used in the wet.

Great feedback so far. Thanks. :D

another vote for these boots. I use them on the daily, good in all conditions. I have to buy 18s for the stock alloys on the car and it's £75 a corner fitted. £300 for a full set of 18s with decent rubber is a steal.

I see the tyre guy a lot as running 18s they don't have much give and punctures and road debris damage is a quarterly occurance.

Always used Vredestein Sportracs on my E30. Excellent tyre, grippy and very good in the wet. The last set I fitted were about £50-£60 each but their price seems to have shot up recently.

And another from me. They wear at a better than acceptable rate, perform both in the dry and wet, are comfortable and don't transmit excessive road noise. Depends upon your driving style really and what you want from a tyre. Some compromises are inevitable, but for me the Kumhos present relatively few and none that are that noticeable.

I was under the impression that Hankook were quite well known. I've always thought of them as a decent midrange brand, certainly equal to Kumho, Toyo etc.

I've just stuck a set of Hankook I*Cept Evo winter tyres on my E36 328i touring. V impressed so far.

Used these all over the place - daily slog down the motorway, up in the snowy Scottish Highlands, Monaco and the Italian Lakes etc.

Genuinely impressed, they cope with all conditions very well imo.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a 255/35/18? I need to put some new rear boots on my wife's E46 Cabby, and could use some advise. It's a daily and goes out in all weathers, but does relatively few miles per year, and she's not into thrashing it around.

Looking to try to keep the spend to around £300 for the pair if I can. Kuhmo Ecsta Spt KU39's are £140 each fitted with Black Circles, has anyone had them in this size?
