yer, its only got an M40 in at the moment so i've been looking about for some super stiff springs, be interesting to hear what other M30 gurus have fitted. Trying to spread the cost a bit so engine stuff for a few months then diff, springs, shocks and bushes on the run up to easter. Aiming to have the car back on the road for the summerWhen you get the m30 in you might need to raise the front end you know, it's gonna get low.
M30 install into calypso cab. Back on the road :)

I left it with my engine builder and he sourced the bearings for me, looking at the invoice now, it came to £172.92jimboe39540i wrote:where did you get them from sag ??
I could have got them for my local parts supplier(Lloyds motor spares) under a special order for a similar price.

right o, getting organised now for the big engine swap, must say am feeling a little nervous.....not really, ok, first up is next weeks hire car, brand new with less than a thousand miles, 320d M Sport with leather, widescreen telly and pimped out windows, looking forward to giving that a good road test
now, its taken me over a year to collect and sort out all this stuff...enjoyed it though.

back to reality, my shoebox sized workshop

cleaned up these bits, hope i can remember what goes where !!

load of stuff from the stealers and the landrover engine mounts as recommended on the zone, they look good and only about £3. The all important new head bolts and banjo bolts, but forgot to order the crush washers. Done the spray bar crimp trick also.

elring head gasket

new boots

4 hole 19lb recon injectors with life time guarentee and new o rings which were actually about the same price as just getting new o rings from the stealers

new plugs, filter, crank seal both ends and thermostat.

new water pp

battery in boot kit thanks to Mick

M30 535i manual box with e30 M20 325i shifter (needs new bushes and Z3 arm)

quite newish looking e28 rad with temp switch 2 blade connection fitted, should be getting a Danthe loom very soon

glad i deceided to change the chain guides, look at what i found with this one, well cracked

and finally the turd and the M40 about to be removed for good

i'll be selling the engine, yes it's tappy on start up for a couple of seconds but other than that it runs very well with no issues. Should get enough for a couple of pints at the local..

got the e28 M535i flywheel and clutch kit to go in
few more bits needed which i've posted in the wanted section and then the hard work starts. Funny how the list of stuff needed never ends...a decent suspension set up would be very nice and after xmas i'll treat the old turd to some stiff springs and new shocks.
right then, soon as old Phil returnes my engine crane it's goodbye to the M40 and then the old turd is off back to the spray shop to get the engine bay sorted out.

OK, popped by the local finishers today so standby for some pure power coating porn. This lot cost me £100 , which i think was a good deal, the finish is laquered.
some bits media blasted only some then powder coated. The silver is an amazing finish, the metalic look is very exaggerated by the flash reflecting off the metal particals in the pics:

good attention to detail, they have cleaned out the thread and cleaned up the connections, well happy with that.

I've got everything i need now to put this old lump back together apart from a week of work, a full time baby sitter and Gary Barlow to keep the Mrs entertained

Little update on progress

M40 on the way out, always forget something and this time it was the clutch slave cylinder supply.

The love of my life, and the Mrs watching

Anyone want an M40 ??

Question for the M30 gurus if I may, how much of this sound proofing and heat shielding do you need to remove ??

Found a bit of rust right in the lower edge of this, will pretend it’s not there whilst I think about if I’ll weld in new metal or not

Half way through scrubbing the bay clean with cleaner and a toothbrush.

Have any of the M30 Gurus taken off the old air box bracket?? I had an M40 in before.

bit more cleaning and removing then off to the spray shop for a couple of coats of calypso

I removed the sound deadening from the front of the transmission tunnel, as the gearbox wouldn't fit with it on there.
I would be removing the wash/wipe resovoir bottle too, as the airbox will be sitting there.
The Old bracket can stay.

ok cool thanks Rav, i'll strip it all out
Rav, whilst you are here, i've read a lot about getting the engine mounts in position 3.
What does this mean ? As i only seem to have one hole where the M40 engine mount is currently fitted in this picture. Only seems to be one option.

here are my mounts, they appear to have 2 holes for the engine rubber mounts, are these the different positions ?

cheers

Yes. The mounts need to be on the rubbers on the front hole.Which is the engine pushed the furthest back against the firewall.
Bit of a pain, But doable

thanks Bristol Jer, gives me a good excuse to read the M30 threads again. I was planning on getting the lump in position with the rubber mounts fitted, keep the engine a bit higher than needed then attach all the mounts to the block and rubber mounts losely then lower and tighten. Keeping the GB supported by a trolly jack.

A few pics of progress putting the front of the block together, power steering pp, alternator, water pp, sump and timing chain cover. All went together quite nicely and it was a real nice change to not get messy and oily for a change !!
I'd really appreciate it if the M30 experts could let me know if i have the engine mounts fitted correctly thanks

Thanks for the comments, keeping me motivated to carry on whilst the wife drooles over Gary Barlow on ITV.
A bit more progress today and also had a flippin nightmare
I went to put the cam chain tension piston and it felt a little stiff going in the oraface, thinking i'll just give it a little push it then got jammed about half way in. Sh1t....i thought, managed to get it out just, went over to the other M30 lump and of course the piston moves in and out nice and easy. So looked down the bore where the piston goes and looks like the end was knurled up, i can only think that the it had been nicked by mistake`. So the brand new piston was well scored now and i was not happy !! With a few hours of very careful emery papering i just about managed to re-profile the bore where it was lifted, flippin not happy though. Put the old piston i still had back in and pumped it up, worked exactly the same as the other lump, thank god.
Lesson leared to carefully check that bore before inseting the piston.
A few pics, hope these might help someone in the future

paint brush and lots of oil, turn cam a bit and repeat.

Well i've got a decent M30 e30 manifold and downpipes going to a custom flange that accepts the M3 exhaust so i'll use that for now with an M3 exhaust and see how i get on.What exhaust manifold setup are you going for
yer, can't wait to get it on the rollers
i'll get the cylinder head torqued up tonight and bolt on the final bits, the inlet manifold is all made up ready to bolt on.
Just got to get the engine bay sprayed up now i've done all the prep work for that before starting to get the new lump and other bits ready to fit. Taking my time to be honest so hoping to have it back on the road for Easter.
How's yours going ? What diff and suspension set up are you running ?
