It won't be a facelift (More like a metal bumpered car thats had a tech 2 kit glued to it)

Good motorsports go for big money.

Hard tops worth £600 all day long

Convertibles tend to have high numbers of owners as lifestyles change / people get bored with the lack of weather to use them.

I would say that if it's any good, the C*** as you call him, could be on the money.

The main worry here is that it's possibly a metal bumpered car with a sport kit strapped to it. Which is a worry I have to admit.

Even though the model and options look good on paper, the same rules apply to Motorsport convertibles as apply to quattroporte 316s. If there's rust, it's junk. Meaning...

The OP doesn't say he is buying one with a tech 2 kit, he says he just sold a tech 2 kitted project.

As I understand it, there was a small number of 1990 G plate motorsports that came with metal bumpers, the later H & J plate motorsports had the tech 2 kit.
If the OP is looking at a genuine G plate motorsport, it should not have the kit fitted.

Lol what does OP stand for? Also its a 1990 model on a H plate, its got a tech 2 kit and he also had a spec sheet from dealer showing its a motorsport?

How can i tell if its a metal bumpered model with tech 2 kit on it? Would it state tech 2 on spec sheet or paperwork?

The only way to be sure is to get the vin number from the car and go to BMW to get an answer if its genuine. Regardless of what anyone else says, this is the only way to be certain. Paper work can be replicated.

Metal bumpers = Chrome tops and bottoms on the bumper like the prefacelift chromies.

I know that, but he asked how to tell a metal bumpered E30...

Its the posts after that made it hard work to understand

£4500 for a motorsport is a good price if its good condition... You should get some pictures up. Im assuming its the one that the guy is selling for his uncle in greece or somewhere?

What bumpers do the early non-kitted motorsports have?

Ah, that makes sense. I got sent some info and pics on an early one, in Nogaro silver I think, and the bumpers looked more chrome than body colour, but it was more likely the pic quality.

It bemuses me how much confusion and misinformation there still is about Motorsport convertibles on the zone.

I think i should write a definitive guide.

The OP states that the car in question has Bubble Leather, which takes me to the conclusion that the car IS NOT a early metal bumpered Motorsport (with possibly a tech2 kit nailed on) and is infact a 1990 M-tech2 kitted Motorsport with bubble leather....

All early metal bumpered Macau Motorsports have FULL grey leather with the tri colours in the corners of the seats.... So yes it wont or shouldnt be facelift.

Both early and late Macau Motosports are pre Facelift as is Sebring...

But Mauritius blue is on the facelift bodyshell, as is Calypso

That'd be ace if you could Barry, or at least just something listing all the facts and I'll put something together for the Wiki. Same goes for any Alpina info you can provide, I started a thread on here yesterday for clarification on a few things.

yep the one on pistonhead advertised for £4500.00, I just got back and came home with a smile, yep I got it. It's 1990 on a H plate in Macau Blue with a tech 2 kit, checked paperwork and vin confirms Motorsport with m tech. Only bad points I am aware of is the passenger windows don't align, small scratch on boot lid, minor wear on drivers door card and seat, wipers stick occasionally and hardtop has a minute rip. drove it back from Peterborough to London and what a sweet drive. I will wash and polish and post some pics up tomorrow, thanks for your help on this chat, big up to E30zone and to all involved.

Thanks

That did look nice in the pics. I suggested he sold the hard top seperately as that alone would have fetched him an additional £500. I take it the folding roof is okay?

Look forward to seeing more pics! :D

I have not had a chance to take the hardtop off yet due to heavy rain all day today but seller seemed very genuine and guaranteed me that it's fully working gets stuck on one position when going down but just need to nudge it and works fine. Drove car back from Peterborough to London last night and was a dream. Will be posting up pics soon and thanks for all the help

Sounds like it could be a good purchase this.

Apologies to op. Should have read his post properly. Bubble leather gives it away really.

Just found that by searching Gaz's username. Being a sticky in a section no one ever posts isn't going to help people see it, will read through the thread and use that for starting point for the Wiki.

What are the main errors Barry? I'll start a page tonight and just add the basics regarding the colour combinations.

Its a common misconception that an LSD was standard fit on a Motorsport convertible.

I haven't got the time at the moment but over christmas i will have some so i can write the Motorsport guide and finish off the Alpina one i started 4 years ago.

That spec list Gaz copied doesn't mention LSDs either. I assume that things like boot spoiler and auto gearbox could be over ridden since a few have lip spoilers and there's a few manuals kicking about.

Anything you can do will be awesome!

Boot spoiler was not available as a factory option. In fact the fitment of M tech 2 spoilers is prohibited on cabrios due to some aerodynamic reason causing issues with the soft top.

I liked to think BMW prohibited it on grounds of taste.

There are plenty of manual Motorsports of all the variants but switchable auto is the more common choice.

That will teach me for skim reading but there is no picture of the first batch despite this quote...
Hope this helps to clear things up a little. The top picture is of the first & second production runs 290 macau blue and nogaro with chrome bumpers. This had silver plain leather. The second two pictures are the 250 run in 1990 with bubble leather and the bottom two the later run with lotus white leather as you can see in the pictures.
The first batch of Macau only differed quite a bit in spec from the second batch of Macau or Nagaro.

Also, there is no mention of option code 796 or 122, only 798.

The first batch also had a mix and match of chrome window trim and body colour bumpers which normally only came with shadow line window trim.

The first batch didnt have a 13 button OBC where all subsequent batches did.

M technic 1 body kit was an option on the first and second batches.
