Rev. counter can quit when the batteries on NiCd battery equipped SI boards begin to fail, and the signal from the ECU seems to be sensitive to a poor connection on its way to the cluster, so check that the C101 engine loom plug is fully engaged in to its socket, with the lock ring turned as far as it goes.

Thought you might have read some as well.

Brian answers this one weekly.

Also thought you might know about the technical section.

If you'd told me that the interior lights, boot light and clock/OBC didn't work as well, I would have told you to check fuse 27. Since you didn't, I assumed they were working, hence the problem could not be fuse 27. I can't see your car, and can only work on info. given.
If that info. is wrong or incomplete, then so will be the diagnosis!
A blown fuse is NOT a fault - it's a symptom of a fault. Now you'll have to find why it blew. Start with the boot light wiring on the hinge, and the glovebox light (if the car's pre mid '88).

i've not noticed the interior/dash lights not working because i've not driven or worked on it in the dark .

but still it's fixed now and i gained a wee bit more knowledge if just the rev counter should fail 8)

It's not really fixed.

You've just put fixing it off for a while.

As Brian says, fuses blow for a reason.
