check play in the rubber joint. i used to have squeaking only when it was damp weather. but now got e36 rack and solid UJ link and no squeak it was more like a rumble when parking lock to lock,

This is the rubber joint in the steering shaft between the bulkhead and the rack itself in the engine bay. BMW sell a replacement rubber disc and special bolts (original is riveted) quite cheaply.

will this stiffen the steering and get rid of the noise?

If there was any play whatsoever with a new, bolted replacement, using the correct shouldered bolts, then you must have assembled it incorrectly. There should be no difference whatsoever between a new bolted joint and a new riveted joint.rich318i wrote:did the non riveted myself mr moore. was worse than my old one with the play. got a old secondhand riveted one that my mate had they are 100% better
Parts required are 3, 6, 7 and 10 on here: http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E30/T ... _assembly/

Sounds like you've missed no4 out on the diagram Brian posted...?
I did this a month back and the steering is tight like new. You've missed something out or put something together incorrectly.!
