Hi well I thought I would post up some info on what i think is a rare E30. First off I'd like to thank some zoners who have worked on and helped me out with it. These are Mark (town325) for all the mechanical work, Dan (Danthe) for his welding skills, John (Johnnyfartpants) for parts and Rob (capri rob) for sticking these pics up!

Well the car is a 325i sport 89 on an f plate in Schwartz black. nothing too exciting there but when the car got to about 80000 miles it was owned by Les Stannards son Roy and was given the full Stannard Motors works!

This compromised of the following....

Full sm 2.7 conversion which includes
Mahle pistons
Schrick 284 cam
Larger 285mm front discs
Slightly stiffer and lower springs

From the info that I've gathered from old mags, info from here and les the car should be kicking out about 220bhp and about the 220ft lb of torque.

I've owned a lot of e30's in the past but since joining the zone in about 03 I think the GUG which had a les stannard block was one of my favourites so when this came up I had to have it!

I rang up les to ask him about the car and he remembered it very well he even finished the reg number when I started to say it! He said to do the engine conversion now he would charge about £5000.

I have all the history on the car which is over 2 inches thick in an a4 folder including all the documentation on
Parts for the conversion.

Since buying the car in august 2011 I have had the following work carried out...

Mechanical

Inspection 2 service Inc all fluids
Cambelt water pump tensioner and all belts replaced
Air pipe replaced
New clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder
Replaced the gearbox
Z3 short shift
Three piece exhaust
New fuse box cover
New fuel tank pipe

Handling and braking

H&r cup dampers
New bushes all round Inc danthe void fillers and z3 m diff bush
E36 rack
New wishbones
New rear discs pads and calipers
Braided brake lines
Upgraded brake fluid
Four wheel alignment

Bodywork and styling

Replaced front valance
Replaced Front wings
Repairs to inner and outer arches and sills
Paintwork to car including arches and sills.
Fitted smoked headlights with hids
Smoked front and side indicators
Private plate fitted
Under bonnet insulation fitted
Fully waxoiled

Interior

Replaced cloth interior for black leather
Replaced tech 1 wheel for tech 2
Fitted genuine mats
Fitted Becker Indianapolis
New gearbox surround
Replaced gearknob
Replaced speakers for pioneer ones
New dechrome aerial
New key with torch
New torch for key
Replaced rear demister switch
New fag lighter
New si board
Replaced underdash panel

I think that's all that's been done but as you can see it's a big list and has cost quite a bit!

The car is now completely different to drive and is the quickest m20 I've driven.

Jobs that are left to do is to get the car professionally detailed, a new set of toyos and I'd like a btb 3 at some point in the future.

Anyway it's all back together now I've had the wheels off and cleaned them and spent two days cleaning the whole car here are the results.

Rob will be putting the pics up very shortly.

Hope you like it......

Just thought i would give you some extra info that i have regarding Stannard Motors and what work they did to the m20. This has been copied from a magazine article in 1994 about the company but i haven't put everything in!

A complete Stannard 2.7 litre motor, based around the original 2.0 block, costs just £2750 including fitting, (there is a fee for final setting up) and is a direct replacement for the model it supersedes. For your money you get the fully machined block, mahle pistons and balanced connecting rods, a new bmw crankshaft with new bearings and bearing cap bolts, new flywheel bolts and new oil seals and gaskets.

The cylinder head is rebuilt with new valve actuating rockers and shafts and a new camshaft, the valves are lapped in to their seats as a matter of course.

All machining is carried out by Swindon Engines via Griffin Motorsport, a company for which Les has high praise for. Swindon Engines is responsible for the engines in the BTCC cavaliers.

Not only are the main bearing caps fitted during the boring process to stress the block correctly, but the unit is also heated to near running temperature. these measures ensure that the bores are as close as possible to the correct shape both before and after the machining - which given the very small amount of metal which can be removed at a time, can easily take up to a full working day.

Neither does Les skimp on replacement parts. Everything is genuine bmw component, and he will only use again those parts which can be safely recycled. That may mean throwing away what looks like a perfectly serviceable set of main and big end bearing and flywheel bolts each and everytime an engine is stripped, and also replacing the hexagon-headed cylinder bolts used in some early engines with the later and more reliable torx type.

'Almost all of the modified m20 engine blow ups ive heard about have been due in my opinion, to bearing bolt or flywheel bolt failure' he says 'They're designed to stretch as you torque them up so you can safely only use them once.

The perfomance figures that are stated in the magazine are as follows.... Standard 325i in brackets

0-60 5.9 (7.4)
0-100 14.9 (22.0)

3rd gear

30-50 4.5 (5.0)
40-60 4.1 (4.7)
50-70 3.5 (4.7)

4th gear

30-50 6.9 (7.6)
40-60 7.1 (7.8)
50-70 6.1 (7.6)

5th gear

30-50 11.3 (10.9)
40-60 10.5 (11.0)
50-70 8.8 (11.4)

Hope this is of interest...

I may be seeing Roy in Dec at the works xmas do. I'll let him know his tech 2 is still about (although Les will have told him no doubt). I tipped him off his pre pacelift was still running a couple of years ago. He was well pleased. He didn't make last years do.

This particular car was the one he took to the e30 21st bash at Rockingham I think. I never went in it but another colleague (with an 88 325i thats also Stannard cared for) tells me it was a bit of a weapon.

Roy's an S14 boy now with a couple of M3's.

I went to the Rockingham 21st bash wish i had of seen it! I last spoke to Les about 12 months ago but if you do speak to Roy that would be great.

Les said that they had m3's now and i heard that he gets about 280bhp out of them!

:poke: lol

I remember karans motor as he let me have a go in it back in his uni days, but he has since moved on to better and faster cars as you do when you get older. It went very well for an old 12 valve engine but not as well as a hartge h27 i dismantled in 2007.

Les Stannard has been around a long long time. I'm curious if he still swears by Mobil 1 synthetic.
