Hi guys. I've got the urge to buy a nice shiny new exhaust system. Am i right in thinking there's 2 different types? 2 piece and 3 piece? My touring is a 1990 325 if this helps

Correct there is both 2 and 3 piece. Your only to know for sure is to look under the car.

As far as I can work out, early 325s had the 3 piece system as did the first facelift models. After 1990 (I think) the 2 piece system was used, possibly something to do with the 'cat' regs that were coming in. I've only seen cats on 2 piece systems.

As above though, the only way to be certain what is fitted to your car now, is to get under and have a look, as a lot will of had exhausts swapped over the years.

Both systems have 2 boxes. The 2 piece has the downpipes and centre box all-in-one, with a long rear section that joins directly after the centre box.
The 3 piece has downpipes with a join just before the centre box and then a shorter rear section.

If any of that makes sense  :D

Danbear, if you are after a system that will outlast a German artilliery vehicle and sound better than Beyonce Knowles moaning orgasmicly down the phone at you, I have a Larini exhaust for a M20 that is a 3-piece system.
It is made in stainless and is considerably thicker guage material than any other stainless system that I've ever come across. Included will be the downpipes, centre section and rear section (everything from manifold, back.) It would be looking at £350 but it would be the last one that you ever bought an E30. The internals of the boxes are considerably better quality than other systems.
Thats the reason I shelled nearly a grand on it.... and I've done 7000 miles with it

Drop me a PM if you are interested and need some more info.
Cheers in advance,
Scott
