Who would be up for this, to throw an idea out there !

some sort of e30 zone uk rally, maybe not the whole of the uk due to fuel costs, but depending who was up for it, could pick a few set landmark locations, and somehow have a "race" over a weekend/long weekend 2,3,4 or whatever days in the summer ! staying in b&bs or travel lodges or whatever, 2 people per car

various ways it could be done- a group all setting out from 1 location

or 2 groups, racing the route and back home, passing eachother/meeting at some point maybe, or tie in with one of the big bmw meets/shows or zone stand at one

or 2 or 4 set starting points

some sort of method to prove a time and miles covered, like maybe a car parking or shop reciept buying a tin of custard :D and taking a pic of the custard and reciept in the landark location (the e30 custard rally lol)

ie- say there were 4 "areas" groups up for it, starting at their local meet area, at a shop/car park, each area has their nominated car park/shop to use by a land mark, all starting at a set time , then the 4 groups race around the 4 stage circut ,obtaining the ticket/reciept at the exact same locations and snapping pics of the car etc where the other groups started at, or something along those lines - meaning everyone covered the same distance !!

and at the end all will be revealed and proven who won :D

Any prizes? Everyone should pay a fiver and then the winner gets what's in the pot

Or everyone pays a fiver and it goes to charity...

I'd be up for it though if I have a E30 on the road...

This is basically what they do up in Scotland, 'Zone roam'?

yeah a bit like the zone roam, but a set of points allowing entrants from different areas all doing the same sort of route but in different order, a prize/charity fund would be good

Work your way up the country... Those not wanting to continue, head back home once they get to a certain point and the rally continues... That way its not limited to one area.

Start off down south and work your way up to the the centre... Then the centre carry up up north, then the north carry on up to Scotland or something? Those wanting to stay all the way do, those only wanting to join up at the beginning of it can then drop back once you get to your first stop or something along those lines?

You got to remember, if you want to do it, then plan it too as no one else will want to do all the hard work for you :D

jim, would all depend who was up for it or not and where from, just a north to south drive with people joining along the way etc wouldnt be that much fun and limit people wanting to and who could start here and just be more like a convoy type thing, for example if a a few from devon/west country way were in, and some from kent/essex eastern areas, hampshire, some from midlands or liverpool and/or hull type , could have a circuit covering them all , something like that, so everyone starts at 1 of the nominated points, and races around, obviously it being more an endurance and routes you know/plot , type race than a racing speed race

or, a north vs south type run ? , all those from the northern areas meet in a central northern location just in scotland, the southern meeting in a middle south location like reading , and racing to the opposite starting point ? and back ?

or if no scots were up for it, a circut like... liverpool-sheffield-grimsby-norwich-southend-dover-brighton-torquay-bristol-liverpool

There is no other "entertainment" up there though........
You'd be surprised! however..... what happens on roam, stays on roam... winkeye

Organising a route and accommodation will be hard enough, some form of 'race' will make it near impossible unless you start and finish each day at the same location.

However, do you really want to put a time limit on people you don;t know to encourage speed...? Could be a can of worms.

The zone roam principle is more: head to the next destination, faster cars in front. Everyone drives at their own pace and when we've all arrived, we head on to the next destination. No pressure to drive at a pace you're not happy with. The cars in front are not necessarily cruising however what happens on roam, stays on roam! :)

Zone Roam's were great fun!

We used Scotland as the Scots occupy a third of the land mass of the UK with just 10% of the population, with half of them living south of the Firth of Forth...
So giving quiet roads with sheep being the major hazard.
We looked closely at Wales as a venue, but high traffic levels on the 'interesting' roads and a lack of local knowledge put us off.

I've always fancied running a roam type of thing in France/Spain,but the issues seem to be,in no particular order;
1)It's over the water
2)Do they do proper(English)food?
3)What happens when I break down?
4)They speak a different language.

Let's look at those just from my experience of using an E30 in Europe.
1) It's a bloody drive on,drive off ferry, only cars with Mr Moore's description of lowering may have issues.I have brought my touring back from Calias with both rear springs broken and £800 of wine in the back...just the towbar electrics scrapped the ferry ramps.
2)The basic ingredients are the same, most French/Spanish eatery's will have an menu written in English, and all will display a menu with prices outside.
3)You fix it! They have scrappies in France! You carry a box containing a few 'useful' bits, bodge tape, cable ties and so on.You can also buy breakdown insurance so that your car can be brought back,France has a decent train system that is cheaper than UK,so you can get home as well.
4)I do not speak a European language,I try to learn the local for 'please' and 'thank you' and smile a lot, most French/Spanish folk are pretty fluent in English anyway.

The other issue here is cost,a trip of this nature for a week or so,using 2* hotels, will cost about £1500 per couple/car....I/'er indoors do not 'do' camping, which may work out a little cheaper, but is perhaps less of a 'holiday',and will allow far less driving time and you have to carry all the gear, somehow.

I'm starting to think about next year's trip,if others want to make up a party, let me know.

no youve got my idea wrong, as i said above, it more about endurance and each cars craft of routes taken, than a set route or "race"

no booked accomodation, its all RANDOM !!! you can choose when to rest or drive and how far you go and when you drive, all you do is lease your 1st starting point, setting off at the same time as everyone form that point, and the other points

then each car just has to do the full circuit, any route, stopping and driving and resting and sleeping whenever they want, so it will be like hair and the tourtise style, some may stop and sleep early and get up early and leave, some may drive on and on stopping very late ,etc etc , or using motorways or a roads and taking any route

principle is, if say there were 5 set starting points- 5 starting groups, all starting in different locations, doing the same circut of points, all going in different directions of the circuit, some starting shorter/longer legs 1st ...point is no one will know who is winning/ahead, coz no one really will be

only when all thew "reciepts/proof posts" are made on here after, with all the pics and tales, would a winner really be known , rather than speed, it would be about craft, luck, endurance, knowlege of roads, and fun !!

ahaa, i see. Sounds like a logistical nightmare but if you're willing to give it a shot then i'm sure you'll find willing nutters, sorry participants, to do it with you! :) For me, a large part of the fun of the zone roam is running in convoy, the evenings in a bar swapping tales, jointly battering broken cars into shape again (mine needed a tent peg, a mallet and a litre of citroen LHM fluid to fix a leda coilover last time out, i sh1t you not!) :P

re ferries, mine has a deep M30 sump and its on it's arse on coilovers and will get on a ferry no problems. If you're cunning, shout to the bloke doing the loading that it won't get up the ramp on the side of the ferry and they often send you on the bottom deck between the lorries. You'll then be first car off the ferry

Ibwould do it gumball style. First to a set point each night. If you dont do that people will drive over night or absolutely boot it and youl never see any of the other drivers. Youl just be on your own thrashing round the country like a dick.

I've done a few big rallies (Mongol Rally 2006 was the biggest) plus quite a few "fun runs", and they all get organised a different way. But the main point is that there's a team behind it all, whose lives are a constant headache of logistics. And it's the logistics that kill these rallies.

One of the easiest ones to set up is a "collection" type, where people have to photograph their cars next to a list of objects plus that day's newspaper. The list is only announced 24 hours ahead of the challenge (which usually runs over the weekend) so that there's very little chance to prepare. The list includes things like a castle, a boat and a car older than your own. Pistonheads had a great game similar to it:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topi ... &t=1169148

Unfortunately, this means people don't get to drive together (Zone Roam style) but it does solve the issue of getting people from Cornwall, Carlisle and Kent all in their E30s on the same weekend.

only an idea and for people to put input/ideas

trouble with a gumball style point to point....everyone will just race, and there are people on here from all over, so those in west country, south, etc will not drive all way up north then start a rally, and vice versa
Grrrmachine wrote: Unfortunately, this means people don't get to drive together (Zone Roam style) but it does solve the issue of getting people from Cornwall, Carlisle and Kent all in their E30s on the same weekend.
is the general idea, and depending who and where, were up for it....is the route taken and the points , 2 or 3 or 4 cars setting off from each point, also...along the way youl bump in to them, have the comedy of driving along getting weary looking for somehwhere to kip, see one of the others, and either join or drive on, or ring them asking where they are and rendevous with them at a hotel, b&b etc etc, its more about a bit of fun and getting peopole involved and driving to places you may never have been before

It can't possibly suit everyone but I think a square route fairly central in the country with 2 points on the east and 2 on the west probably about 600 miles or less with the original plan of a photo showing your car ,receipt and landmark would be the easiest way of doing and will attract more drivers

i think so, depending on the number interested, maybe also a central slightly north and south point, making it 6 in total

come on everyone whos interested, put some points in !
