Seeing as there are a few BMW techs on here whats your opinion of the X1.

With a baby due in February the RS Megane needs to go, which totally pains me as it is by far the most fun hot hatch I have ever driven.

The wife likes the X1 and considering I only really drive occasionally at the weekend I realise that she will drive it far more than me to ferry herself and wee one about. What ever model we go for it will be on a lease or PCP deal.

Does anyone know what they are like to live with, I'm not expecting a drive anything like the megane for fun but I can put up with a slowish car as long as the creature comforts are as good if not better.

Had looked at the Q3 and VW Tiguan as well but BMW are doing better deals on the X1 hence the interest in it. I do like the Q3 though its a nice place to sit.

The ford Kuga also has some good deals at the moment, but the interior for me is a big let down.

No doubt you will shun it because of the badge, but seriously take a test drive in a Kia Sportage, for base model X1 money you could get a top of the range Kia KX4 with all the bells and whistles.

Self-parking
Sat nav
Reversing camera
18 inch wheels
Full leather
Heated front and back seats
Cruise control
Hill decent control
Hill start assist
Built in Bluetooth
Twin panoramic sun roof
7 year warranty
Really cheap 3 and 5 year service plans

etc etc

Seriously take a test drive I think you'll be surprised.

Even if you really hate the idea just humour me and test drive one.

The Q3 for a 2.0 TDI S-line was £497 a month, the Tiguan R Line was £429 a month and the X1 1.8D Msport for £329 a month so on price the X1 wins it hands down.

I havn't quoted for the more powerfull X1 yet though.

Not so much on a lease, Kia Sportage 2 1.7 CDTI £297 a month for 3 years and an up front payment of £800.

X1 no up font payment and an extra £30 a month based on a 2 year lease. I'm not looking for anything more than 2 years as I get bored very quickly.

From Kia Direct? Also do you know what term and deposit would be required. I'm not keen but the truth is it would be my wifes car.

Had one new in July 2011, Xdrive 2.0 D SE auto (did.nt like the manual box ). No probs at all and quite like the drive with plenty of get up and go 177bhp. Had run flats purely cos theres no spare but you get a bit of tramlining. More importantly her indoors likes it,not too big ,sit up slightly ,4x4,fairly economical, comfortable etc .
Would advise you to test drive both manual and auto. Auto much better drive in my humble opinion.(and honest John) Got "free" 5 year service deal not that they need much in that time, nowt till 2 yrs old.

Call me old fashioned,or even just plain old,but I could not run a car for two years on the same sump full of oil!
Just think about it,the poor thing is started from cold twice a day,all that condensation running down into the oil pan  only driven 5 miles so it never gets hot enough to dry the water out of the oil....

No if I’m honest even though we supply all the fleet dealers they can do them cheaper than we can directly for some bizarre reason.

that quote was from a company called carleasingmadesimple.com but bear in mind it was a generic quote as I’m sure you will be aware a lot will depend on the period of lease, your mileage and if you want maintenance included or not

well worth a look though i've done 100's of test drives in the sportage sold to most and not a single person has said they dislike the way it drove

I agree with you Malc but pretty much every brand new car these days is on a 18K \ 2 Year service interval. Its good for the first owner especially when under warrantly. Longevity otherwise. Hmmm, not conviced these cars will see 10 years or so.

I have to agree, I like a manual in a performance car, but for whats this is I'm a big fan of a auto. So much so my cabby is one as well. I love a bit of lazy driving.

had we been talking saloons or c segment cars i would agree but the x1 x3 and x5 just aint that great considering how much they cost, and to be fair dont even look that nice

the x1 and x3 just make you look like you wish you had an x5 but can't afford one

Know what you mean old boy ,would never have done in my youth,Running in oil from new then changed at 500 miles then twice a year after that, regardless of mileage. Head off and decoke at 25000 or earlier. But times change and all that and I wont be keeping it as long as the E30s

the new X3 is much more attractive car than the original X3 and you know what, it drives very very well even with nasty run flats

its certainly a better driving car than anything kia has to offer

Just checked that site and the Kia comes in at £365 a month for the diesel KX4 for a 2 year non-maintained lease with 10K per year, so is even more expensive than the X1.

as for the x3x1 making you look like you wanted an x5 but cant afford one, thats bollocks. its like saying you wanted a 5 but could only afford a 1

x3 for me is an ideal all rounder and superb execution of an SUV

did a say i have driven the sportage, i dont need to. not a lot comes close to the feel of any bmw.

i have considered many times moving away to another car, but another equivilant like an audi or MB does not feel as good to drive

other lesser cars like jap/korean/french offerings are not up to the build quality of the german cars

i drove a 6 month old insignia a few weeks back, my daily e39 with 151,000 on the clock felt tighter and better to drive

I feel that head off and decoke at 25k is,perhaps,un-nesessary given today's fuel injection and improved oils, but I'm the guy who may be buying these things at ten years old :o: so 'proper' maintainance when new helps!

25%, and thats obviously down to the way the kia drives.

1, yanks dont know what a good drivers car is, they still use leaf springs FFS
2, they are in a far more serious rescission than we are and their middle classes who aspire to drive a bmw can not afford it

and that 25% ( if true ) its taken sales from not just bmw, but Audi/MB and others too

There is something about the look of the X3 that doesn't really appeal to me, no doubt it's most likely a good car but its out my price range and well a bit bland looking.

I've still got a few months to go till we really need to change the car and I think I'll struggle to get anything that's as good a deal on a lease as the Megane. £217 a month for 2 years on 10K mileage is hard to beat.

The C classes are cheap too at the moment but both my brothers run them and don't really want the same.

Sorry the Kia salesmans logic above is 8ollox. The reason the BMW , even though more expensive if bought outright, is a lot cheaper to lease than the Kia is because it has far better residuals .

err I think your the one with blinkers on mate, I like nice stuff like BMW's, Merc etc, but after working for them i also realize that Kia are actually a good car which i would never have thought without knowing what i know now.

Hardly ! You blamed the Kias higher lease cost on its cheaper purchase price =cheaper sale price at end of lease.

You said = "to be fair that is one problem we have its becuase sportage is cheaper to start with so its future value wont be as high as a BMW. so prehaps not ideal for you on a lease"

The Kia is more expensive to lease than the pricier BMW solely because it has poorer residuals. I am sure it is a worthy turd BUT without the lure of being shiny and new with a 7 year warranty , the Kia is probably on very few peoples short lists when looking for a used car.
