Can anyone tell me which m20 engine is identified by casting numbers BMW 1264165 and 29C82 both cast in to the block. I am hoping that this is a ETA block as I am looking for a crank and Rods for a 2.7 stroker

You need to look for the engine type number, on a flat machined area near the LH engine mount.
First two numbers indicate the engine capacity. E.G. 20.... = 2 litre engine, 25...... = 2.5 litre engine.

I was going to ask this myself aswell.
the flat surface which is supposed to have the number on it is blanck (machined off?) & all I can find is MB18E,
this is on my old engine.
any ideas??

With just the short motor in front of you,an eta unit will have flat topped pistons and an 84mm bore.craigsaxon wrote:Can anyone tell me which m20 engine is identified by casting numbers BMW 1264165 and 29C82 both cast in to the block. 325i,on the other hand, will have pistons with an 'odd' shape to the top.
If you are looking at a full engine, most UK eta units came with the 200 type cylinder head, pulling the rocker cover will enable you to count the cam bearings, just four on an eta, seven on the 320/325 heads.
