M30 install into calypso cab. Back on the road :)

Making a start now on swapping the old M40 donk out of the cabbie, its faithful old lump but M30 power is calling. Firstly thanks to all the guys posting their experiences on here, i've read the lot word for word and can't say how much i appreciate your advice. I picked up an engine from Barry about a year ago. e34 M30B35, pretty good lump actually and all looks in good condition. Since then i've got hold of the following bits:

M30 Manual box
e28 m535 rad
e28 m535 flywheel and clutch kit
engine mounts
new water pump
spigot bearing

ok so next thing is get the head sorted, remove all the rocker arms, springs and valves, send the head off to be pressure tested and skimmed. i'll clean up all the valves and re-lap them in when the head gets back. Shrick cam to be fitted.

Anyone know if a 1mm skim and a shrick 284-deg cam will still keep sufficient piston/valve clearance...?? I'll better do some maths to check also !!

Need to get a whole load of stuff also including engine service items and additional kit to fit the lump.

Look's good. I can't awnser about the cam but I do have a 1mm skim. Using a e28 m535 cam this time round but last time i used a e34b30 cam and I wish I had left it in.

You're better off sending the whole head along with new bits to Corry's in Hemel and let them do it all. M30 heads can be a right bastard, particularly if you're trying to reuse old rocker shafts (top tip - don't). The last time I tried that the bastard got stuck halfway in and did not want to come out because I didn't have access to a slide hammer where I was doing the job. There was consequently some epic language and secondhand shafts with the ends slightly mushroomed over - it doesn't take much. Don't reuse old rocker shafts!
Before pulling the old shafts out, mark them very carefully. There are four of them, they are different and they fit in a certain way so the head bolt cut outs and rocker shaft clips are in the right place - they're a fucking hateful bit of design really. It's worth skimming the head to get the compression up as well.

You know what Andyboy, I’m glad you mentioned that as i was looking at those rocker shafts thinking, if can get them all the way out and back in without damaging anything I’ll be surprised. So i gave Corry’s a call and they are going to replace the valve stem oil seals, de-coke the head and valves, re-lap the valves, change the broken rocker arm, replace the cam, skim and pressure test - all for a decent price really and it guarantees a proper job also.

Yes, always. If not BMW, Reinz or Elring. I wouldn't even use a Payen - it's a bastard job you want to do once. The head bolts go again though. Don't forget to bolt the front cover on the head as that needs to be skimmed at the same time.

E28 style motors were 10:1 compression. Later ones were 9.2:1.

am a bit gutted with mine, looks like i damaged one of the cam shaft bearings whilst removing the cam, thought i was doing it carefully enough also, i've mushroomed up the edge of a bearing a bit where the cam sits....i hope the machine shop "corrys" can fix it otherwise i'm going to need another head ..am really gutted... Wish i'd left it all alone and simply sent the lot off to the machine shop, could be an expensive lesson learned...gutted

little update, managed to find a replacement head thanks to a well known M30 Guru zoner on here (winx) sent it off to Corry's and got home from work today, looks like Christmas come early, this was in the garage:

reconditioned cylinder head. Replacement rockers, exhaust valve guides, oil seals, skimmed 0.5mm, valves lapped in and pressure tested and best bit.....a Shrick 284/280 cam fitted. All looks nice and a good job done at not a bad price also really




Quite pleased with that. Next up is continue to clean up and paint all the bits and bobs. Really need to get that crank nut off so i can replace the chain guides as one is cracked.

£200 postage plus £23 postage and some VAT.

They did a really nice job and called me after to check i was ok with fitting it, like not rotating the rocker shafts as they are all lined up and ensuring the spray bar is pointing the right way (arrow towards the cam sprocket). Overall, i would recommend them.

yer, can't compain at all. Really need to get that crank nut off now, then i can strip down the rest of the block. I've got 3 boxes of stuff now:

Box 1 - Blast and powercoat black
Box 2 - Blast and powercoat silver
Box 3 - Blast only and will get the TB media blasted with soda if i can

Spent ages looking at peoples M30 conversions mostly on here to see what the best looking colours are for the various bits. Lee - your's looks great so i'll probably do something very similar to yours if you don't mind!!!

Then i suppose i'll be robbed by the stealer for a box of gaskets and seals, might have to wait until after xmas for that

I cleaned out the ICV last night, got loads of gunk out of it but there is still some black marks on the inside looks like cooked on oil. Do you think it will be ok or should they look minty new inside?

Gaskets and seal from Matt (Meatballs) ECP, I got all mine from him, Elring H/G set, new waterpump, Stealers for New chain guides,

And you do know you have to replace the Headbolts on these when you pull them apart, right??

What did you use to clean the ICV out?

Thanks Rav, i'll do that, headbolts make sense also, they probably are not that expensive anyway.

I used carb cleaner and a toothbrush for the ICV

Headbolts were about £27 for the Elring ones.

Cleaning the ITB sound right, the black scoring maybe due to deposits sitting in there and when the shaft rotates has caused some scoring.

cool, thanks, i'll plug it all in, take some restistance readings and it should be fine. Can't wait to get all the reconditioning work done then start putting it all back together, bet it will drive a bit different to the trusty old M40 lump !!
