I've had problems with the central locking on the driver's side, i either won't unlock the door and sometimes stops you unlocking the other doors. The latch on the driver's side now seems stuck in the open position so if you shut the door nothing catches as it normally would.

Sounds like the latch has siezed up.

I would remove it from the door jamb, clean, lubricate and work by hand until it operates smoothly.

May also pay you to obtain a 'lock repair kit' from your local BMW stealer to enable you to build up a new door lock to suit your key.

Sounds like it gave you fair warning, you ignored it, and now it's bitten you! When a minor fault appears, deal with it, and an E30 will serve you well as the most reliable car you will ever own and with the lowest running costs.
You'll have to take it all apart, free up whatever has seized, lubricate it, and hope that nothing has broken/worn to the point of being unserviceable.

Oh this will be fun. What did I expect the answer to be though? I'll have shot at that tonight. I've fixed everything else that's gone wrong it.
