Would this work with a normal 318i ?

It will fit. It will lower cruising revs, but it will also bog the acceleration down.

Next best thing to a 4.1 mind and an upgrade over an open diff either way.

I wouldn't say not ideal, it will just make the already slow 318i slower in terms of acceleration.
My touring currently has the standard 4.27 diff fitted and its awful on the motorway, I'll probably be fitting a 3.91 when I can be bothered.
