Engine not sitting on mounts properly and at an angle

Is it normal for the engine to sit at enough of an angle for the gearbox mounts to not sit on the mounting bracket?



I used 2x M5 (I think) rubber mounts and they look to be seated right on the subframe.

New mounts on the engine and gearbox, engine I used M5's (from memory) and the box is E30 mounts.

Is the blue rope holding it up?

No, it was used to lift it in, it's hanging lose between the engine and firewall.

Any pics of the engine mounts?

From memory, I used the E28 M5 mounts and had to remove the small rubber tang on the bottom of the round mount so the mount could then be turned through 180 degrees. If this wasn't done, the mount will sit slightly out of line with the engine mount - I did fit mine like this first, but noticed the round mount was being squashed on one side, I didn't notice how the gearbox sat as I turned the engine mount round when I noticed, but it may of not let the engine sit down correctly.

If it all bolts down OK, I wouldn't worry about it - new mounts can take a while to 'bed in'.

None of it's bolted down yet which might not help. From memory I have the e28 m5 mounts as well, I have the little bit sticking out lined up so it's in the hole or slot on the subframe. I'll get a pic of the mounts later if I get a chance.

You need to take that little 'bit' off with a grinder, it doesn't sit in the subframe.
If you look at the mount, the two threaded sections are offset from each other. If you try to fit the mount with the little tang in the subframe, it will pull the mount out of shape - I can't think of how to describe it, other than the mount will look like its leaning. It will eventually cause the mount to tear.
With the little tang removed, the mount can be rotated so it sits straight as it should do.

As above, the litte rubber tang on the mount makes sure the mount is fitted the correct way for the offset threaded studs when fitted to the M5, but the offset of the studs is wrong for use in the E30, so the the mount needs rotating until the mount holes and studs line up - from memory, once rotated the threaded stud needs to go through the hole not normally used for the mount (I can't remember if its the inner or outer hole).

May sound silly but is the gearbox mount bigger one side than the other? Or is that camera angle?

What if you turned that 180 degrees?

Gearbox mount is taller on one side. Turning it round would make the matter worse.

Both my gearbox and engine mounts are the same left/right, prob just the camera angle. I didnt get a chance to look at the engine mounts today, might get to it tomorrow.

The engine mount might not be causing this problem, but if you do have the little tang in the subframe, it will be causing the rubber mount to stress.

I'm nearly sure i pointed them tangs so they were either in the hole or in the slot on the subframe.

Does the threaded stud go in the slot or the hole in the subframe?
