Hey,

I'm Saf, new to the forum and the BMW world! I've been playing with Old VW's for 6 years now, a full on passion, I currently have 4

1980 Mk1 Golf Series 1 - 1.3 Turbo (in its element!)
Image

1981 Mk1 Polo L - 1.6 16v
Image

1984 Mk2 Polo Coupe - 1.3 Carb
Image

1985 Mk2 Polo Coupe S - 1.3 Supercharged

The Golf is currently in daily use, but as a temperamental stripped road-racer, its constant need for attention is impeding me from cracking on with the restoration of my poloes.

So I needed to find a more suitable daily.

Having owned 25+ cars is the last 6 years, they have all been front-wheel drive VW's, so I wanted to step outside the marque and have RWD.

It had to be old, for sheer rawness of the driving experience, awesome looks, ease of home maintainence, and because I'm over 25, the joys of cheap car insurance.

Bonus points for car finds that were older than 1973 (tax excemption) or 4 x 100 stud pattern as they could share my collection of existing wheels.

Such a vast array of weird and wonderful cars, but I found a Gorgeous E21 beemer, which I am collecting tomorrow, details below

Spec

BMW 316 E21
Ordered on 20th August 1982 with optional extras - Manual Sliding Sunroof, 5-Speed Gearbox & a Blaunkpunt Radio/Cassette in the Colour Black with Anthracite Trim for an on-the-road price of £6,981,
Built on the 4th October 1982
Purchased on the 4th November 1982 from Hexagon of Highgate
1,766cc
114,982 miles
Purchased by a husband for his wife, the car remained in her possesion in Tottridge until March 1989 where it was sold to her brother, in Chester.

Woken from a 7 year slumber, he wrote his own advert with spritely enthusiasm.
ello, I am a BMW 316 E21

I was made in October 1982 (I am 30 years old) and I have been with the same family all my life.

I have travelled 114982 miles and always been very well looked after.

For the last 7 years I have been locked up in a garage and now I am free to travel and enjoy my old age.

Oh by the way, Im in pretty good condition for an old boy.
Heres a couple of pictures albeit poor. I will take some proper ones very soon, as I am on a 2 week holiday from work.

I am on the lookout for a decent coilover suspension kit, or a equivalent good shock/spring sports setup (Hnr/Koni) that would drop well with 14x7 wheels running 195/45 tyres with no arch contact.

Not sure what the general aftermarket wheel/tyre choice is for regular e21 owners.

I will be fitting compomotive splits, banded steels, borbet bs, exips or oz ruotes to it (they are all 14x 6-8), lowering it, repairing the drivers seat, and upgrading the factory speakers, popping a sub in the boot and enjoying it in daily use while I crack on with the work on me poloes.

Anyway yeah Hi and I look forward to checking out some of the build threads and chatting to you guys, and I will get some decent pictures up very soon
grungeisdead wrote:Cheers guys,

I wont be making any drastic changes , however my housemate has an E30 cab which we are putting a V8 into so he is upgrading all his suspension to M3 items, so I will hopefully be able to utilise his suspension and get my tig welding genius of a friend to make up some coilovers with a rally design kit.

Drive home was fab, such a pleasant drive and well put together car, however there is a judder under braking ( of which the brakes are poor) and slight vibration when driving, will get the car on the ramps at my friends work and give all the bushes a pry. It could just be the tracking and balancing, or warped disks.-

Replace brake fluid, check disks for warping, check bushes and joints for play
Oil and grease the door hinges
drain oil and coolant, replace filter and fluids
replace fuel filter
give the paintwork a mop

few rusty spots will get attention and I'll give the floor a cleanup and reunderseal and hopefully next year we can get the car in and give it a blowover, some grazing of the paint of the rear left quarter.

so bar giving the cars engine a general service, getting the car looking fresh, and a new set of wheels I will be happy with a fantastic looking cruiser.

Will get it down to my unit tomorrow and get lots of pictures for all :) as we do love pictures!

rolled up to santa pod to collect some new wheels

and got them on the car today

done a few service bits as well, new sparks, dizzy cap, anti-freeze, oil change and filter as well as replacing some rogue vacuum hoses.

tomorrow I am planning on changing the gearbox and diff oil, and measuring up my friends now surplus e30 325i cabriolet brakes to see if they will fit.

badly need to change the front seats or a bare minimum the drivers as its down to the springs and mega mc painful!

I was checking this one out on the bay, has a good histor iirc family owned since new. Great choice of wheel, what are the? what are you doing with the Mahles??. I'm not sure about the E30 calipers, I think that volvo 240 twin pistons are seen as a good upgrade, as are Gaz coilovers.

What are your plans engine wise? Turbo?

I've got an 82 316, unfortunately not in black! Nice solid cars that get a lot of looks (if that's your thing?), fun to drive but not as fun as an E30 I have to say! And yes, the seats are sh1t, my ex wouldn't sit in it for more than 20mins before she would start moaning about them... she's gone and I still have the E21!

Have you checked out the E21 forum?

thank you for the warm welcome gents

engine wise, I am planning on making up an inlet manifold for bike carbs, ran them successfully on 1.4 16v conversions in my poloes in the past.

Speaking to a friend, I was considering a 6 pot 325i conversion as my mate is putting a v8 in his e30 cab, however I have heard that the M10 units are pretty bullet proof and respond well to turbos and ITB's so that may be in the pipeline, but for now the cars just getting tidied up and being used as a daily, whilst I crack on with the other cars.

Still need to check out the e30 brakes, been doing alot of research on coilovers, will probably make my own up as I'm struggling to find any without shelling big bucks, might chop a coil or two off over the weekend, just so its sitting nicely until I can find some decent suspension.

Good call on getting rid of the ex! easier than fattening her up for a big ass to cushion the blow of the poor seats. I've got hold of some recaros out of a ford, that my unit mate had, so going to weld up some subframes for them and get them fitted. They are grey unfortunatly, but beggars cant be choosers and with a tiny erse I need all the help I can get!

I have signed up on the e21 forum too, top bunch of guys.

couple of daytime shots - car is filthy as bastard workmen were cutting concrete next to my drive :(

Welcome to the zone, I like the S1 Golf 8)

Nice looking E21, I really do like these but it really needs some bigger tyres on those wheels as they just look lost. Skinny tyres never really work on BMWs.

Aloha :)

Cheers for the welcome and the love to the Golf! Tax runs out today so I will taking it to my unit, got a new turbo to go on it (trying out a K03) and a new stainless exhaust system to fit, so looking forward to that, been a few weeks since I've driven it.

The BM deffo needs larger tyres and a coil or coil and a half cut off the springs.

I do have larger tyes in the unit 195/45/14s but its just getting the time to get them swapped over at the minute!

Hopefully do some quick maintainence on the Golf, get it back into daily action and give the BM a bit more tidying

Travel is not a problem but how much do you want for it and will it make it home under its own steam?

Well a month has passed and I'm still loving the BM.

Got a momo boss off the 'bay and fitted one of the few 300mm momo team steering wheels I've got kicking about, although gutted I cannot find my horn push in amongst my myriad of parts.

Fitted rear speakers and a sub/amp in the boot, life with tunes and bass is amazing, don't know how I managed without it for the last few years since the muppets fiery demise! Oh yeah I remember, a supercharged soundtrack works wonders =D

On the quest for coilovers or lowered suspension, it seems that no one in the BM world actually wants to part with theirs, so after suffering vertigo since I bought it, I chopped 2 and a half coils out last night from the front suspension for some aggressive rake look :)

Image

Also go round to offering up the recaros, need a slight bit of modification with a welder but nothing too drastic so will be jumping on that this week.

Had the unfortunate task of attending a funeral for my best friend who sadly passed away far too young, the funeral fell upon my birthday. We had a birthday bender booked in Amsterdam, but made alternative arrangements, got the cars polished up and respresented Walshie, in a funeral procession of fillthy automobiles - he would have been proud!

Image

And a snap from attending an end of year soiree between a few NW air-cooled clubs

Image

Nothing much to report in the Beemers world bar enjoying it. Still got lots of little maintainance jobs that I have been putting off due to the cold weather, but now the new years arrived, its time to get some cars finished up and moved out of the unit.

Thinking of swapping out the lump for something fruity, was just going to bike-carb the current, but i think the liners are worn on the block as its smoking a bit when setting off, most notable when reversing!

Now for up, up for swapping for something modern TDI'ish or something interesting

Spec when purchased

Purchased by a husband for his wife, the car remained in her possession in Tottridge until March 1989 where it was sold to her brother, in Chester.

Woken from a 7 year slumber, he wrote his own advert with spritely enthusiasm.

Excerpt from the ebay advert when purchased 2 years ago.

"Ello, I am a BMW 316 E21
I was made in October 1982 (I am 30 years old) and I have been with the same family all my life.
I have travelled 114982 miles and always been very well looked after.
For the last 7 years I have been locked up in a garage and now I am free to travel and enjoy my old age.
Oh by the way, I'm in pretty good condition for an old boy."

Since then it has had :-

New Track control arms
Replace brake fluid, check disks for warping, check bushes and joints for play
Oiled and grease the door hinges
Drained oil and coolant, replace oil filter and fluids
Replaced fuel filter
Gave the paintwork a g3 and wax
Removed 2 1/2 coils from the front springs
Changed the diff and gearbox oil
New sparks, dizzy cap, anti-freeze.
Fitted rear speakers and a sub/amp in the boot
Fitted Fiesta RS front seats
MSW alloy wheels made in the 1980's - 15x7 4x100, with 195/45/15 Nankang NS2's.

I also have to fit:-

Brand new RPM Gaz GHA Front Coilovers
New wheel bearings front & rear
Volvo 4-pot calipers
323i discs (new)
1.8 16v M44 engine from an e36 (comes complete with ECU, Loom, 4 branch and downpipe, gearbox, linkage, propshaft)
Bike carb flange for M10 engine
New water pump for M10 engine
Spax rear lowering springs

Bad points :-

Early last year, I think the headgasket went, the old girl was supping water like a beast. A can of steel-seal later and the car has been fine, albeit returning 25mpg. Hence the purchase of the M44 engine.
Leaves the new owner the choice of either restoring the original engine, or replacing for a healthy 140bhp which offers the best all round drivability in an e21.

Steering wobble - Unbalanced & Untracked front wheels, been too busy to sort, perils of a daily driver!

Braking wobble - warped discs or sticking calipers. Braking performance is still reasonable, but won't be any good for after the engine is converted, hence the puchase of the 4 pot (bolt on) conversion.

Very few spots of rust, couple of bubbles under the rear windows, and a couple of blisters on the rear panel. All easily sortable, don't let this detract you, as the car has been very well looked after only being owned by 1 family.

Starter motor sticks occasionally - knock with a hammer and it's fine. Needs whipping off and regreasing.

All said and done, it sounds worse than it is. I drive the car every day and its been faultless. It just wants a bit of time spending on sorting out the niggles but I currently don't have the room as theres a few cars in the queue!

£3500 including all spare parts
- £300 if not including Coilovers.
- £200 if not including M44 engine.
- £200 if supplying your own wheels

Pictures will be uploaded later this evening
Car is located in Manchester.

I am not open to offers unfortunately, I do not have another daily to drive at the moment, and do not require the money, however with owning 5 cars - I do need to start thinning the flock. (Plus I am a VW guy at heart!)

I am open to swaps/px's for a modern TDI daily, ideally a PD engine as this could be later converted into my Mk1 Golf, but try me

Few pointers

The hazard switch is missing, it stuck in the on position on saturday, so I have removed it to strip it down and fix it.

Rust spots - front and rear of drivers side rear window, rear of passengers rear window, corner edges of bonnet, rear above bumper.

Paint issues - Slight blistering on passenger rear arch in 2 spots, crazing to the paint in area about the rear arch, scratch on bonnet from prev owner removing bird grime (not pictured)

Driver side recaro still to fit, car is my daily and have travelled 15k in 15 months, and despite its faults (its a 32 year old car!) it has been an absolute trooper. Done 350 miles this weekend, and got the front tyres changed (to 195/50/15s) and stuck on the back, with the 195/45s on the front. Same make as before Nankang NS-2s
