How do I tell if the fuel filter needs to be changed or starting to fail ect?

Hesitation, decrease in fuel economy, poor running and starting.

They're cheap - get it changed

Dead easy to do probably part of a 2 year service anyway? About a tenner.

Next time i do mine Im wearing gloves over me sleeves, so i don't get petrol trickling onto my armpit!

It should really be done every time the oil is changed, which should be every 6 months..

So in short.. get on it

Before changing the filter, pull out fuse 11 with the engine running. This will depressurise the fuel system, resulting in less fuel running up your arm.

I love the wiki so much golden nuggets in there.i followed the advice and de pressurized, there's quite a lot Og fuel in left in those filters even so tho!
