Very common problem with E30s, where the filler neck goes into the tank, usually rots and starts to leak.

New tank is the solution. (To do it properly)

DON'T be tempted with a second-hand tank. It will have the same rust issues. Also, make sure you get the right-sized tank for your car as there are two sizes.

Depends on body style more than engines; tourings and cabriolets have bigger tank, as do all 325 models.

Everybody has recommended a new tank, but it may not be the fault. The fuel filler pipe (from filler cap to tank) does also rot, and could also be the problem you described at the top of the page. I had this on one of my E30's, its a bit embarrasing putting £20 of petrol in and watching £5 worth run straight onto the garage forcourt! This could be good news as they are much easier to fit. Either way its worth getting it checked over before you start ordering parts. Hope this helps.

ECP/GSF offer a pattern fuel tank for around the £200 mark, but you really do need to examine your own to confirm the size first.

From under the car,the smaller tank has one side lower than the other,on the larger tank, the sides are the same depth.

Both sizes will fit,and a car with an engine conversion may also have had a tank conversion!

I had to stick a new tank into mine. The metal had all gone soggy around the inlet. You can tell what tank you need (if you need one) by lifting the rear bench seat and counting the holes. A hole either side and thats a bigger tank. One hole on the drivers side with a blank on the other, then thats a smaller tank.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Think I paid 70 odd for the tank and about a ton to fit. Might have been more to fit but that means finding the receipt to check. They have to drop out the rear driveshaft as it runs under the tank.
