ok - picked up the engine this weekend - it turns over just fine but it looks bloody awful - how would u clean it up? - is it just best to stat away from cylinder chambers alltogether or is it safe to fill em up with something toxic to clean em out-
is there any seals or other things that i should defo replace on such an old block before i do the engine change or is it just a case of hit and hope - i dont by any means have money to burn but if someting really needs to be done i'd rather do it now whilst the block is on the bench.

I would definitely change the sump gasket and rear crank seal, and probably the front crank seal as well. Probably wash out the insides with parafin while the sump's off as well.

Get new shells put in if it's an old engine.
I've had a quote for Ԛ£9 a journal but i'm not sure if thats good or bad
If i get that done then i may as well put new rings in as well, so it's starting to add up.
No point in making it look good if all the oil channels in the crank are blocked and you only get a thousand miles out of it.

There is NO nucleus.

Is this a bare block or does it still have the crank, pistons etc. in place? If so I would strip the lot to the component parts and do the following...
1 - Check that the crank shaft journals are not scored or worn/out of round. If you do not have the equipment to do this take it to a decent machine shop.
2 - If the crank is OK just buy a new set of main and big-end shells together with a new set of big end bolts. Else have it re-ground and fit matching bearing shells. Even from BMW these items do not cost the erath.
3 - Replace front and rear crankshaft seals.
4 - Clean pistons and fit a new set of rings.
5 - New oil pump.
If its a complete engine with the head still on and you don't know its history then personally I would take the head off and re-build that as well.
If you are going to the time and trouble to replace an existing engine with a new lump it is well worth carrying out the above. Would be a shame (and bloody annoying) to fit the block and then have a bad oil leak or have something major let go a few miles down the road.
