The new m6, will be basically the same car as the new m5, just a bit sportier, quicker and a lot nicer looking so that would be a better car overall I'd say
Probably out-right best road car by BMW has to be the E46 M3 CSL
Some great other suggestions here, 2002 turbo, M-coupe, e30 m3 etc etc
All depends on what you define as 'best'
An E36 m3 is technically better than an E30 M3 - more grip, stability, power etc, but most people would say an E30 M3 is a much better drive...

I love;
E30 M3
E36 328i Sport Coupe
E36 M3 EVO
E46 330i ClubSport
E46 M3/M3 CSL
E34 M5
E39 M5
New M5
X5 4.6iS on 22inch rims!
I'm sure there's more great ones but I can't think of them now!
Current fave is the E39 M5
I dunno why, but I can't get on board with the M6, I think the M5 is cooler!
E30 320i Touring with M-Tech II kit is nice.

Anyway surely the best BMW's are engines, not cars
The old turbo F1 engines, the recent F1 engines
How about the McLaren F1 Engine? two e36 evo lumps stuck together more or less

I can't say the Macca as its not really a BMW, as much as I'd want to.
I adore the E30 M3 DTM, and I've said it before if I won the lottery I'd try to get hold of one of these instead of a ferrari or something like that.
E46 M3 GTR killed the 'Ring with Stuck pilotting, it comes close.
To be absolutely honest, would have to be a Sport Evo E30 M3, in black, completely smoothed off door handles, locks, just the BMW roundels and some BBS RS's. Heaven indeed.

For me the only one which gets me going is the E30 M3. Nothing before or after has the same character in my opinion.

BMW M1
Agggghhhhh Now that's a car
http://www.bmwm1.com/pics.htm
Check out some of the videos on this web site. They're quite big so only do it if your on broad band, but worth the wait for the action and sound.
And it hasent been faked like Hollywood.
CSL Batmobile - Awesome looks
2002 Turbo - Two fingers to Greenpeace
M coupe - Shows it's not only ferrari who can make cool bread vans!
But as Lordschleife said the Turbo'd 80's F1 engines are the only time in my life I have enjoyed having bleeding ears!!
