Hi Guys

I am am wondering if anyone could offer advice on running Style 5's (18 8j et 20 & 9j et22) with a brembo 4 pot BBK. The car is a 87 m3 with an s54 Transplant, currently on original suspension shortly to be upgraded to KW V3's. Rear brakes are OEM.

As i understand the tyres will need to be 215/35 f & 235/40 r to reduce on tyre wall rub. My arches are rolled so I'm prepared in that sense. Also after a little research; it would seem that i would need to use 25mm spacers up front to clear the BBK and perhaps set with a negative camber to bring the tops back inside the arch?

Also from a track or geometry perspective taking into account the tyre/wheel size and offsets and with the fronts being spaced out 25mm more, would it be advisable to use spacers on the rear too?

I understand this set up is a little different and probably because of the hurdles that it imposes, but i love the look and think the extra stopping power is imperative with the added 40 odd kgs up front.

Has anyone done this before?

Any help, info or advice on the above would be very much appreciated :) Thanks.

Dean,

Do you have a photo of this setup from behind the disk? From what I have seen, the Brembo are a direct bolt on, but you need a spacer between the disk and hub for it to line up correctly inside the calliper.

This has knock on effects to what you want to do, so this has to be sorted out first.

No spacer used on this setup. Disk is on hub face, calliper is positioned using the custom bracket.

I would hazard a guess that a 10mm spacer would clear the wheel depending on the internal spoke design.

Turk, with OEM callipers i needed to fit a 5mm spacer for minimal clearance. Depending on how much greater the Brembo's protrude further than OEM, this added to the already 5mm spacer will give my new clearance.

The issue is more so trying to alleviate the tyre wall rub on lock.

Ok, well no spacers behind the disk is a really good start! :)

The problem lies not with the the front wheels pointing forward and the clearance between the tyre and the lip of the arch, but with the clearance in the leading and trailing parts of the inside of the arch.

The E30 is not really designed to run such large diameter tyres, and anything with a OD of 600mm + and 15mm spacers will result in the outer edges of the tyre rubbing inside the arches when taking tight turns (this is also dependent on ride heights). If the 215/35/18 has a OD of 608mm with an effective et of 0 (worst case) it will certainly be very tight, but not impossible, on the front you might have to run 1.75-2º -ve camber, I think you should pursue it and see if anyone else is running this wheel with larger brakes. The Brembo calliper is actually quite compact and looking at the bracket its about 3mm inset over the OE calliper so that adds a little clearance, unfortunately without having all the measurements and the inside profile of the type 5's its almost impossible to say what size of spacer you would need.

Hope that helps some what.

PS I think your M3 has Sport Evolution Arches, that will help you with clearance also!

Agreed Andrew, this is the issue that i had when i last tried to fit them they had 225/40 rubbers and was hitting the inner arch very soon when turning. Now have 215/35 awaiting fitment.

I have tried to research on all the obvious forums if anyone else had run this setup and saw that one guy knew of someone who achieved this by using 25mm Hubcentrics, the post was very vague and ends there, and was also very dated!

I did however see another thread on s14 about how a guy was just about to run this setup, cant remember which size spacers he intended on using (i should imagine 20mm to result in 0et) but mentioned he was going to use E36 M3 control arms to shift the position of the wheel inside the arch to alleviate the inner arch clearance issue! I cannot seem to access the site and have message the administrator to no success!! The guys alias is ALINE_M5 does anyone have a contact for this guy or even on s14 to possibly help establish communications ????

Failing all the above i think it will just have to be a trial and error session with a few different spacers, camber settings and so on so forth :)

Thanks for the info Andrew.

Dean, I have not had a chance to add you to my Whats App, this is my first week back after a two week holiday and its been manic.

I have a photo of all the three front control arms, you may have to run the Evo Arm (I think) and possibly even run something like the AKG control arm bushes to give you even more castor (as thats whats going to move the wheel in the arch to where you need it to be) the top mount castor and camber is not that effective for actually moving the wheel forward. I will dig out the photo when I can.

This is the link to the AKG control arm bushes (solids).

Yes the E36 3.2 Evo front lower control arms (I think they are about £140 each, but dont quote me on that!)

I would give meatballs (Matt) his email address is: matthew.gregory@eurocarparts.com a quick email for prices, hes very competitive! Ask for the lemforder arms only.

Yes the M3 and M3 Evo have different arms, you need to make sure they are from an Evo and part numbers are

31 12 2 228 461
31 12 2 228 462
