He admired my car and told me that I should take the rubber grommet off the bottom of the accelerator pedal to make it go faster. What was he on about!?

Try this experiment, take the intake boot off to the throttle body, get a mate to step on the throttle ( car doesn't have to be running to do this ) and see if how far the TB butterfly opens up.
Then decide if you need to remove the throttle stop

You're looking at about a 10hp gain.

Seriously, I got 10bhp when I fixed the WOT throttle function of the TPS!
I said:
Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

What you want to do is rust the whole car into a stance sport lightweight, that's worth about 10pDanThe wrote:Dont forget to fold the rear seats down

rumour has it that if you put the sun visors down it knocks off 2secs from the 0-60 time. But only on the 320i & 325i non sport models

I heard fitting a new flux capacitor release valve does wonders to an old m20!

I haven't got a rubber grommet behind mine.
Got a kick-down switch instead. I have a sneaking suspicion that removing that might just make it even slower...

Schadenfreude - the German's haven't got a word for that.

The advice given to the OP isn't necessarily without foundation. I cured my 18 year old's 'faulty clutch' yesterday by removing the doubled up floor mat from under the pedal, and if the throttle cable isn't adjusted properly, and is slack, a bit more pedal movement might just open the throttle a little more.

Fucking hell Brian
Hardly the right thing to do, im amazed you in a round about way suggest it. The fact here is with a correctly set up throttle cable removing the stop will gain nothing
I've several cars loose power from a slack throttle cable, even as much as 30hp on an m635csi
