there must be something mate it not a luxury really, im not talking about a switch that puts the windows up/down all the way, just 1 that works like the interior light does so the window drops slightly then back again once the door is shut. am i going mad??

No E30 cabbie window will lower without it's switch being operated.

you need to adjust the windows so they don't get caught on the roof. An e30 does not have an option of the windows going slightly down and up automatically when closing/opening.

I just got a 320i convertible and I have the same problem.
The front window catches the overhang of the hood when closing.
Now if I follow the thinking correctly I adjust the window to a lower point to go under hood without catching.
BUT then I will be left with a gap between top of window and rubber seal won't I??
Is this the case Voodoo? or did you figure it out in the end?

If you take your time and set up the window following the linked guide, you will find that the glass will slip under the 'gutter' and rest properly against it's seal.hansfreekit wrote: BUT then I will be left with a gap between top of window and rubber seal won't I??

Although it shouldn't be necessary, as explained above, it wouldn't be technically very difficult to devise a circuit to lower and raise the windows a small amount when required.
You'd need a timer to apply a short 'lower' pulse, to the window, triggered by a door handle switch (heated door lock or interior light delay) for entering the car, and triggered by the internal door handle (shouldn't be difficult to rig something like a magnet and reed switch to the connecting rod) for leaving the car.
You'd then need a timer to apply a slightly longer 'up' pulse triggered by when the door pin switch turns off.

Unless it's had a replacement door, this is more than likely that the cars had a replacement hood and has the incorrect number of spacers fitted at the rear. This makes the hood sit too low at the rear and the back corner of the glass clip the hood.
You can adjust the glass all you like but if it was correct when the car was new, chances are the glass will still be in the correct place now. If anything, the hinges would wear over time and the door / glass would sit lower!
It'll be hood adjustment needed not glass.
