Last time I had some bits done pre-MOT, the mechanic said that my iS would have had a two-tone horn when new (it's one-tone now).
Is that true? Was it even an option?

Not unless someone went to the trouble of fitting all original wiring! I wonder if it will say on the build/options sheet from the dealer?Alex wrote:Sure they havent been fitted by someone ?

The twin horns are more than an 'add on' - they use a different body loom, since the twin horns are mounted in a completely different place than the single, and uses a different kind of connector.

My '89 318iA touring had a dual tone horn and my '89 316iA 2 door had a single.
Converted the 316 to a dual now, simple enough to do.

I know that the E36's have dual horns on the 4 pots because I disconnected my friends for a laugh and asked him if it worked, which it still did.
Sounded far in-superior to that of the might six pot though...

I hated that single horn on my is. No man points, it translated more like someone saying 'coo-ee' when used..

There's no problem bodging twin horns onto one of the more lowly E30s - I've done it on a couple of occasions, using E30 or E36 horns, complete with plugs and a short pieces of loom, but both horns have been fitted behind the kidney grill on the same single stud, and the loom splice performed behind the front panel, to get the join out of the weather.
To fit them in the correct place would require two brackets welded on behind the foglights, and the wiring loom modified and re wrapped all across the front of the car.

My '90 is has two although at first I could only hear one. Popped off the grille and the second horn had corroded terminals. Cut away to expose new metal and soldered on existing leads.

If you have two horns, then AFAIK, neither of them should be behind any grille.
