whys my aerial on the roof(above windscreen)? every other e30 ive owned or seen its on the rear quater next to the boot. its an early '88 320i 4 door facelift with manual rack, no elecric windows or sunroof (one of the first facelifts i presume).

Maybe your car was built during the infamous 1988 Co-ax shortage.... terrible times.
These are sensations as hard to forget as they are to ignore.....

I'd take a guess at someone went to the effort of moving it to the roof from the boot?
A bit strange though so I would say it's more like that the front half of your car was a touring or a M3 and has been stuck back together with the rear end of a saloon

My last chrome turd had the roof mounted aerial - when I stripped it it did appear to have been there since new. Very odd

Why the fook they didnt put a bit of wax protection round it is beyond me

Aerials weren't standard fit, if the car was ordered with radio preparation the saloons got their aerial on the rear wing, tourings and m3s on the roof.
If it was supplied with no radio prep then a previous owner will have taken it elsewhere after delivery to have a radio it in, and it's a lot easier to route the wire to the front of the car than run it all the way through to the boot and put an expensive electric one in.

My first 325 was a white 4 door, mtech kit etc, and the aerial came on the roof, im assuming it was from new as the same owner owned till i bought it....
