doing the sump gasket its a cork type unfortunately,

ive read around people saying different things...

engines allready out so not an issue, obv clean the surfaces, then brush on some rtv sealant to the block and sump seat the gasket and tighten down?

does it matter if i apply all around the gasket? and is it just a brush on thin layer of the rtv stuff or thick layer?

in the haynes it just says apply it on the front and rear covers.

My opinion is the thick paper gasket is better in the long run. The cork ones tend to go brittle and crispy over time and seem to get pushed out of the mating surfaces, more so at the back for some reason. Last time I ordered one at BMW I was expecting the paper one and a cork one turned up. BGA do the paper ones, which are available at GSF, but I wouldn't use their gaskets for anything else.

If you are using sealant as well you only need a little, or when you tighten up the surfaces it will squidge a load in to the sump side, it will be stuck for a while but if it falls off it will swim about in the sump and possibly block the oil pick up.

Those coolant pipes turn up?

Edit: The cork gasket will seal fine for a good while, I fitted it to mine.

I fitted a cork sump gasket to the M30 in the cab, it's been sat there for about 3/4 years, and all is OK.

Cork sump gaskets are okay as long as they are fitted dry and to a perfectly clean surface. Start pissing around with gasket sealer and it won't last as long. You must also torque the sump bolts to the correct torque.
