I am planing on building one of these up in the garage then doing a swap into my tech1 sport to give it a bit more poke and i have been doing alot of research i have found most of what i need on here and have most the parts some bits i am stuck on tho ,is people say about uprating the clutch .but what clutch do people go for and what sort of power is the standard one good to ,i am wanting to go to around 350 ish

also this megasquirt wires generally make my head explode but i dont fancy paying a fortune for someone else to do it i have looked and only ever seem to find half bits of information does anyone know where there is a decent guid on what i need to do to set fuelling up

and manifold i know the yankee ones often foul our steering but this one looks like a higher mounted one ,any ideas on if it would be any good ?
Removed link due to school boy error

or this one much cheaper but unsure on clearances and quality ?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/82-94-BMW-E30 ... 43a6af9021

any help much appreciated as i say i have had a good look through but most seem to skip the more intricate idiots guide to the electrics side of things ,and them manifolds would probably be better than a home made job ,thanks

That top turbo manifold is for an M50

There is a manifold for sale in the uk that's about £130. It's not the best quality but ill be using it and will brace it to make it stronger preventing the welds cracking

bugger school boy error there , whats this uk one your going to use i am wanting something just to get me away at first ,i can always replace it at a later date ,i havnt drove my newest e30 yet it was only delivered tonight but my last e30 325 was a bit of a snail so quicker i can get the turbo motor built and in then i can take some time building a better manifold myself or saving for a better one only got a limited budget right now and i want to fully rebush the car fit a full coil over set and some other treats for it
thanks

I use a 6 puck cerametalic clutch from clutchmasters. Its a little fierce for town driving but extremely purposeful. My standard clutch didn't take much more than 6-7psi. Megasquirt is an easy install. I bought my ecu built and fitted myself. That way the wiring is as neat as you want. Your first pic is one of a 24v engine, not the m20. My manifold is similar to this one in positioning, make sure you go for the m20 mani. The second I'd guess is gonna be tight due to the wastegate takeoff being right where the steering linkage runs.

You could go for a VEMS ecu .
Here is some wiring info on it for a M20 engine.

With great challenges comes great engineering.

and i can cut that waste gate bit off if it gets in the way ,has anyone used one of these just for an idea of quality (i know it wont be the highest) and clearance ,just need to buy a spare engine and sort management out before i can get the build underway

This is what I've used and can't really complain about quality. Neat welds and plenty strong (used for lifting the engine in and out). They were available in the UK a couple of years ago for a ton odds, but see some chancer is listing them at nearly £900.

Edit: this one lets the turbo sit forward plenty too (better for access)

thats exactly what i want and thanks for the pics ,looks a good set up you have there ,i was looking at an internal waste gate setup ,but i suppose that will depend on the turbo i use i have an evo 8 turbo just sat in the garage at the moment i am planing on using that but i think i would need to modify the flange or get an adapter plate for the manifold but thats not a big problem .
thanks again for the pics

even better ,puts a little more faith in it even if its a bit crap and snaps or something silly for that price could just buy another until i get one made up properly i am just going to get the build done and moving then upgrade stuff to the highest spec ,having a bit of trouble buying that manifold because of him not sending outside usa through ebay he said postage will be $80-120 and he will send it but i can not bid on it because he has set the postage to usa only so need to do it outside of ebay but getting straight prices out of him is quite the task .
cheers for the replys

Next question not really worth starting a thread about is head studs ,I would like ARP`s but i have been told from a lad who is running just over 400 bhp and has built quite a few m20 turbo`s that metric blue head studs are just as good for the power i am wanting to run (upto 400 bhp) , has anyone used these or have any comments either way on them ,also where would i buy some .Thanks

How much can you get the arp`s for ,it will be a little while before i buy them yet i am just getting parts together ,i would like to go higher power but i think i need to strengthen other bits first anyway and my turbo and wallet are only good too 400 bhp

yes standard m20 well at the moment i am going to be stripping it right down and doing a full rebuild on it anyway ,but dont have fortunes to spend yet, i have an evo9 turbo ( i dont know any technical spec for that i know they are good for just over 400 bhp but thats on a 2.0 4 cylinder) I hear i should be buying a holset hx40 and a lad has offered me a gt35 for £500 but i am not sure if that will work .I still need to do alot more reading but alot of what i read seems to kind of contradict other projects ha.,will keep eye open for pm cheers

gt30 gt 35 size is about right for a 6 cylinder ive got a gt35 on mine hx40 is abit big for a standard m20 maybe a hx30 or 35 with a 14 or 16 cm housing
you need to talk to people that have been there and done it

Thanks for that that was one thing i was getting a bit confused about the correct size for a turbo dont want too big but too small is just useless too and people just seem to use a mix match, I know alot of this has been gone over and over again with people asking the same questions but there is so much information its hard to use the search feature too ,there is a local lad called Pete crown who has a m20 turbo cab and has done alot of engine swaps including V8 s ,i plan on asking his advice on some stuff too he seems a top bloke who knows his stuff .

A GT35 is quite large for a M20. I wouldn´t use one unless 600whp was in order.

I'm running a holset hx35 on mine,and starts spooling nicely at 3000rpm
very happy with it,also I'm running a vems ecu, supplied by Gunni on here,
Clutch wise I'm running a helix paddle clutch, seems to be holding up,
will Be going back soon to up the boost and another tune, shall see how the clutch holds up then :D

only just noticed your reply blacke30indy ,i am going holset for mine now i was also thinking of maybe using a vems from gunni ,how much did you pay if you dont mind me asking ,and is there much advantage over megasquirt .Also where did you get the clutch ,Gunni has a bloody good reputation so i will take his advice there on not having a gt35 although i would really really like 600 whp that can come next year

Hi sunny,I bought my Holset for £350,that was brand new,
I got my vems for £680,that came with everything needed to run my car,
Was bought during the group buy That Gunni did last year,
vems basically has everything you would need, has some cool
Things like anti lag, variable boost control, launch control, and lots of other
Stuff,
I bought my clutch of Gunni,as a used item, that came of another turbo m20,
Sometime this year I will be getting a Sachs 618 preasure plate, and Sachs disk,
But for now I think the helix should be good for now,

Yea gt35 is abit big,but the hx35 is good for over 500 + bhp also
And are pretty cheap for how they perform

Indy :D

Got a couple of q's on the hx35. 1st, does it whistle? I want (NEED) a snail that whistles we use larger holsets on large log moving plant at work and they whistle like mad. The t3/t4 cheap ass hybrid I'm using spools mega fast but I'm not loving how it sounds.
2nd, where did you get it at that price?

Cheers.

I've got a wiring diagram kicking around for my squirt. I'll pm u it if I can find it. I've got an hx50 from a Scania, way too big for an m20, more suited to an m30 I think but got it free after our diesel fitter mis diagnosed excessive shaft play, the new one was worse. I'm happy with how mine spools but I'd love to turn heads with that all too tasty whistle. I'll keep my eyes peeled. Cheers.
