I know of one brand new M6 convertible that needs a new engine because of this.

The car hasn't even been PDI'd yet!

Another problem with the F10 M5 that is becoming apparent is a knocking from the rear.

In both cases i have seen the car has had to have a pair of rear EDC shocks fitted and it is a known problem with them now.

Of course, these only represent a tiny fraction of the cars built but it would put you off for life. No matter though because for every customer lost, there are two more to take their place and sales increase year on year.

Mind you, if you think BMW are bad, Audi have them well and truly licked. There is virtually no chance of a Multitronic gearbox getting past 100'000 miles and the 2.0TDi engine is a real lemon. perhaps we should all buy Kias!

There has been a lot of problems since the E30. Off the top of my head...

Vanos
Nikasil
Swirl flaps on diesels
Turbos on diesels
Oil consumption on petrols
Boot floor / subframes on E46

...
Currently slumming it in an E46 Touring

Vanos, Mostly S50B32 so a relatively small number
Nikasil, That's a UK thing
Swirl flaps on diesels, M47 and M57 only
Turbos on diesels, This efects ALL TD engines, not just BMW
Oil consumption on petrols, This varies
Boot floor / subframes on E46, Again, relatively small number in comparison to total production.

Every premium brand in every industry is cost cutting. Could this be one factor?

Plastic impellers in water pumps, chinese components, spped of assembly and the need to make money are all factors.
Hmmm. Coonts! My brother has a Motorsport 3 series. Looks lovely and goes well, but it's not as plush as it should/would have been....

Is it true the Double VANOS or VANOS units are made by Rolls Royce ? That is what a Service Advisor told me. I have had the Double VANOS replaced with a brand new one and that is for a M3 CS. (Replaced by previous owner .... He paid labour .... BMW paid for parts)

Rolls Royce made the M3 Evo Vanos units, perhaps the single ones too. Not 100% sure.

Nothing wrong with plastic impeller water pumps - I wasn't aware that they were supposed to last forever. I have one here in my office that is still perfect and bears a 1995 date stamp. Another over hyped problem.

Sorry but saying that vanos was not a issue since the m3 is insane, have a 04 316 that is facing been scraped after the exhaust vanos let go, broke the chain guide and bent the exhaust valves. Now I know this and extreme case but I have changed vanos units on 4 of these turds this year for sounding like diesels at idle. Change far more suspension components on 3 and 5 series's than we do equivalent mercs.

Every company has recalls, one of those things about building cars.

Some are major recalls and some are minor. I know Volvo has just recalled all the police cars for a head gasket issue.

The vanos unit on my old s50 b30 was indeed stamped rolls royce. Other well known issues with m3,s were rod bolts streching (re call on early s54 engines, bolts then changed size) there was also a cam sprocket issue with an upgrade brought in by bmw. Another issue probrably with older engines is the oil pump sprocket nut coming off and in some cases the shaft snapping either way distroying your engine. Im sure there,s more issues too, quite shocking realy lots of m3 ticking time bombs out there. Why do we still buy em?!! LOL

I never said its not an issue.

That will be an N42/N46 engine and EVERYTHING goes wrong with those sacks of shite!

Vanos is pretty reliable on all other BMW engines.

As for suspension, E46's and E39's do seem to go through some but later BMW's like E9x 3 series and E8x 1 series seem to be a lot better. I can honestly say other than the odd drop link i haven't replaced any other suspension components on these other than accident damage.

How did you get on with that E65 760Li by the way?

Didn't get any more time on it was sold on at auction, owner was happy to put fuel in it with a card from his job but hadn't the stomach to start paying to fix it, and you are pretty much right other than n42/n46 the vanos units are pretty reliable its just there quite a few of them around and they really are horrendous engines. Done a lot of front suspension lower arms and track rod ends on the e60s that haven't got massive mileage. Had a 10 reg e class in earlier in the week 242,000 miles not km and the only play was the front wheel bearings which with a small adjustment were perfect.

Track rod ends on E60's and E63's yes, but thats steering not suspension. :)

The N42/46 has got to be BMW's worst engine ever built!

OK ill give you that and I'd prefer the odd steering and suspension joint than the amount of stupid electrical faults we are seeing in fresh vag stuff 08 golf today one door totally dead, (dead door ecu) and another door with a failed lock and the child lock on.so no way to open and an absolute balls to do anything with as you have to take the door skin to access all the door internals which is a bit of an issue when you can't open the door :x

Yes forgot about them priuses

Imagine shelling out in a new Ferrari 458 Italia Coupe .... Didn't Ferrari recall these ?
McLaren did some minor update on the MP4-12C to improve the aural sound and can't remember maybe the sat nav as all the mags preferred the Fezza 458 over the Macca MP4-12C

Bmw recalls are nothing compared to Honda!

When the bubble/spaceship shape civic came out, most of the parts on it were recalled! From flywheels to cycliders heads to door handles to handbrake levers to brake sqeaking to wiper faults. I worked on Hondas for 5 years as a fuly qualified tech at the biggest dealer in europe, we saw recalls all the time on most models. Bmw aren't that bad but now working for them, recalls are becoming more and more as the fight of mass production, demands and quality takes over
E30 Crazy!
