Hi guys recently fitted a m20b23 into my m10 carby everything is up and running but I'm suffering from poor fuel economy I out £40 and I've just got 69 miles out of it before it popped onto red.

Any it appears I have a vaccumm pipe hanging off and from this diagram

It's the pipe from the manifold going to number 16 then number one which is a partial throttle sensor which I can't find atall

Help much appreciated guys

Later 323i's had a number of bits deleted - number 8 (2/3 way valve) and Number 1 (what year is the engine/donor car?)

These later ones (and all automatics) only had vaccum advance on the distributor, and the retard system (Number 8 and it's pipework) was deleted. All that lot did was to alter the ignition timing and coasting fuel cut off and shouldn't be making your car do 11mpg.

I would be looking to make sure the vacuum hoses are the right way round on the distributor. Also check the idle mixture with a CO meter and if it's running mega rich, look at the throttle position switch on the throttle body. You must hear a faint 'click' as the throttle is opened. If not, wind back the throttle stop screw until you do. Having this incorrectly adjusted will lead to a stinking rich mixture and terrible economy. The idle speed should be a steady 750-800 rpm.

Hi thanks for the reply all the pipes are on the right way on the distributor and all vacuum pipes where renewed so IDE say it isn't that what's causing my bad mpg

Engine I believe is a 1985.

What's the idle mixture screw ? More info on this mate would be appreciated, I've just changed the dizzy and rotor arm as it was heavily pitted and corroded an seems to be running a little smoother now.

If part 1 was deleted on my model where would that pipe go ? Cap it off or leave it open ?

They are capped off. Idle mixture screw is on the air flow meter, but check everything else first.

Yes mate everything is correct minus just that one pipe that is not connected that's suppose to go to number 1.

I also can't hear the tps click as you described which way do I need to turn the throttle stop ?

The tps does click sorry my bad hearing seems to be running smoother since I changed the dizzy cap and rotor so ill empty the tank and see how far I get on 40 ltrs

Yours should have a cold start injector.

Not always - in 1985 they dropped it and revised the ECU to open the six main injectors for longer on cold stats.

The engine was from a 1986 car and was an auto. There was no partial throttle switch fitted when it was in the original car.
