Sorry, you and your dad are wrong.

What you're dad had was as you say, an M535i. Which was a 535 with m tech suspension and trim. It still had the M30 standard 3.5 engine. It was not until the e28 M5 when it got the 24valve motorsport engine that the first real M5 was created.

Many say and believe it was the first mass produced M series car but it was never an M5.

The Lotus Carlton developed by the might of Lotus is the ORIGINAL gran daddy of mega performance and it can still keep a E39 M5 very very honest unlike the earlier M5s

At the guy that said the E12 M535i is an M5 ? Sorry it is not as it did not have a bespoke M engine .... However, I can see how us easy to get confused with BMW naming .... The M635CSi is the original 'M6' but has a similar naming convention ....

Soni, there were lots of fast 4 door turds long before the Carlton came along.

The Carlton was undoubtably a very serious thing, in between meltdowns, but there is an overriding stench of council about it.

Yes there were fast saloons before its time most notably the iconic original M5 and that Alpina which I was not aware off .... However, the Lotus Carlton was pumping in figures so impressive .... That they were respectable another 15 years down the line which is a major achievement .... I have at home a group test from Autocar between the E39 M5, E55 AMG, Lotus Carlton, equivalent Alpina 5 Series which ever that was and a Brabus

Btw so what if it looks a bit errr 'council' the Carlton like a Ford Focus RS and similar Essex / chav / council cars are kinda cool .... Like going out with a dirty slaaaaggg after going with a classy bird .... The build quality wont be as good but will still shift

I believe the B10 Bi and the Carlton were similar in performance? You wouldn't want to own a Carlton nowadays though as a lot of specialist parts are NLA. We're spoilt with BMW

It wasn't.

That will be the E12 Alpina B7 turbo from 1978 which incidentally was one of three models that Alpina launched in 1978 as complete cars that were not kit of parts conversions that previous Alpinas were.

The other two models launched in 1978 were the E24 Alpina B6 turbo and the E21 Alpina B6 2.8.

In fact Alpina also had a had a lot of input in what became the first car developed by BMW Motorsport, that was the E9 CSL.

The Mercedes 300sel 6.3 of 1968 beat the B7 turbo to the title by 10 years

it took out a few walls but hardly dented the panels on the old tub

E28 is the correct answer to this question. SA spec with leather everything. shadowline trim and a great big lump of tupperware round the bottom...

For me, it would have to be an E34 Touring in Avus blue with extended leather. I've seen them on M parallels but I prefer throwing stars with the turbine covers.
