Crank position sensor?
This tells the ECU that the engine is cranking,so the ECU switches the spark plugs on....you have power at the coil, the terminal with the green lead?

Youth is wasted on the young.
have fitted new rotor and distributor cap, replaced cps, have power at coil but no spark, plenty of power in battery also,i have been through the trouble shooting guide also and no joy,is it a short anywhere, sorry also meant to add earlier this is a track car so all stripped out, i have fitted my own tank and fuel pump and wired stand alone
hi again, got car started,it turns out the extra cable that runs with main cable from the battery to the connector block in the bulkhead was broken/fused, ran a new cable and car started first time, before all this i tried all the trouble shooting methods, hope this info will be of help to someone on here, will put pictures up soon of the car , thanks to all who replied, talk soon, cheers
Interesting indeed.....is this a USA e30?monoon wrote:hi again, got car started,it turns out the extra cable that runs with main cable from the battery to the connector block in the bulkhead was broken/fused, ran a new cable and car started first time, before all this i tried all the trouble shooting methods, hope this info will be of help to someone on here, will put pictures up soon of the car , thanks to all who replied, talk soon, cheers
I do not have decent circuit diagrams for Euro/ Aus/Nz/SA models unfortunately.
I noticed on my USA circuit diagrams that the extra lead coming from the battery is indeed a fusable link but when I previously mentioned this here on the forum I was advised that this link does not exist on Euro etc. models

By any chance, does this car have the battery in the boot? You mention "terminal on the bulkhead" and "fuseable link" - this usually only applies to BiB installations.

Are you sure?? This link exists on all E30 models with a rear mounted battery.Billwill wrote: but when I previously mentioned this here on the forum I was advised that this link does not exist on Euro etc. models
This problem would have been solved in two replies if a) it had been posted in the correct forum, b) the OP has given a bit more information, and c) the OP had answered Daimlerman's question in the second post of the thread.
sorry for posting in wrong forum, was in a flap and thought more people would be in the chat forum, the car has a rear mounted battery, it melted my head for a few days and thought putting up what was wrong would help someone else, also what is the reason for this extra cable and should i replace the cable or fuse or both?
if this topic should be moved to another please do,also would like to add that i have been on e30 zone for a while and never posted and was unsure if anyone would bother as i am new, have car out for the first time on sunday, when i hopefully have it back in one or two pieces i will put up pictures and info about it on the motorsport forum, the car is going to an event in mondello park ,dublin called retrostock, its a bit of hooning about, if any of you guys are interested look at retrostock.ie.
thanks for all

You should also ask someone to look at your keyboard for you - the shift key doesn't appear to work!
The reason for the two wires is to isolate the engine electronics from the low voltage and spikes that will appear on the end of the main battery cable at the front of the car when the engine is being cranked.
Fuse is #14 here: http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E30/2 ... ring_sets/
