Been having a problem with the fuel guage only reading when the key is turned but the car is not started.

Once going, the guage would read as empty.

Now the fuel pump was found to have an earth problem which is now fixed and the guage is reading but showing too little.

On testing one of the senders with a multimeter it was shown to be knackered (according to the nice RAC man!) so I figure from lots of search on here that it is best to replace this and it should fix my problem...

But I'm trying to find the right part number and there is some conflicting info depending on the thread that I find.

According to real oem there are 2 senders with the following part numbers:
16141184022 (this is the knackered one)
16141179720

Anyone confirm if this is right..?

What do you want - confirmation of which one is your knackered one?

One post from Dan-318is suggested that 16141184022 was for a 318is and the other part was for a 325i

I want to replace the busted one but want the right part number before I price with Cotswold or look for a second hand one.

Hopefully thats a little clearer!

They're both for a 325i; the 318iS will only have the one sender. That's the difference :D

And 16141184022 isn't the sender, it's the pump housing. 16141152266 is the in-pump sender. Beware though; a new sender will be in the region of 100 quid. Traders on here will sell you one for significantly less.

16141152266 is the RH sender on a 62 litre fuel tank, and is the same as the only sender on a 55 litre tank. It fits into the fuel pump assembly, and is secured by four small nuts with washers under them - don't drop the washers into the tank!
The main cause of failure of this sender is some muppet trying to remove the fuel pump assembly without removing the sender first, and denting in the casing.
16141179720 is the LH sender, is fitted to 62 litre tanks only, and reputedly can often be repaired successfully, although I've never come across a duff one, so I can't confirm this
Both should have a resistance of around 60 ohms in an empty tank, and a resistance approaching zero in a full tank.

Cheers folks. I'm moving to Portsmouth so I think a call to adit will be made in a couple of weeks to source a 2nd hand one! Dont fancy chucking 100 notes at a new one if I can avoid it!
