Yesterday evening I did a deal on a rather nice 328i touring as I felt it was about time the E30 cab was rested over the winter period (the last 3 years have been cruel to it!).

Wanted a touring and had shortlisted E36s, E46s and E39s. I knocked the E39 idea on the head owing to the potential big bills plus it's just a touch too big (given that I don't have children or a dog). Between the E36 and E46 I decided it would depend on what came up first but it had to be a 2.8 and manual.

As if by luck, a rather nice example came up on Pistonheads earlier in the week. Checked it out yesterday evening and a deal was struck.

Very nice original car - has 2x keys, full toolkit, glovebox torch, all the manuals. Like the fact it has the original orange indicators and BMW stereo, even the Alpina reps don't look out of place (though likely I'll swap for a genuine set).

Otherwise standard affair - dual zone climate, full leather, sunroof (hurrah!), full 18 button OBC, auto dip mirror, ASC (never had a car with traction control!).

The only thing I can see myself doing is installing some HIDs and sorting out the genuine Alpinas.

Collecting it on Monday, here are some photos from the advert. :)

ASC is useless TBH, mine is never on as it's a bit dangerous in my opinion, especially pulling out of junctions

Nice original car though, be looking for one myself soon

Thanks, it looks decent and Alpina reps aside is properly original.

I wonder whether it can live up to the E34 520i!

My E36 touring was a very good car - drove like new

The only downside was that it was the 323 not the 328 - made a lovely noise but it did require a lot more of a prod to get it to shift

^Looks nice.

I'm actually after a set of 16 inch alloys as per your one with a view to getting winter tyres.

You must drive like a complete fool to have ASC kicking in when pulling out from junctions, in which case with it off you'll be leaving tyre behind and lots of smoke, all the time!

I've just been caught out a few times hitting gravel/water anything remotely slippery when pulling away quite quick

It just shuts the power off and isnt progressive in the slightest, and yes I do drive like a fool sometimes don't we all

The E30 has been having a hard time of things. 3 years and 40k miles later, it has been pretty bloody good but the daily grind is taking its toll. The body is suffering with rusty arches and it needs a little love, care and attention to put it right. As such, it was felt a winter car/daily driver was required.

Criteria:
- Cheap(ish) to run
- Manual
- BMW

For some reason I was drawn to a touring, don't ask why. My gf seemed to think this is the go ahead to get a dog (fuck that!). 3 and 5 series variants were considered but ultimately it was felt for a cash a decent E36 would be the best bet, fewer potential big bills, easier to find a manual.

The search commenced on Autotrader and Pistonheads and (surprisingly) quickly a good example was found.

On viewing the car, I was impressed. The owner was a genuinely nice chap and proper enthusiast. Had multiple BMW in the past, currently owned a 135i and a TVR.

The car itself was honest - straight up panels, started first time from cold on the button. All documentation present and correct (I love to see all the original manuals including for the stereo). Plenty of bills for the last few years which the guy had self serviced, two sets of keys, a touch of rust on the rear tail gate but otherwise bang on. The spec was good with leather, climate control AND a sunroof (hurrah!) The only minor thing were a set of Alpina reps but they had decent tyres all round (can always be sold later). A deal was done. 8)

Picked it up yesterday and I have to say so far I'm very very happy. :)

Spent the day with this stuff:
Image

My only niggle with the car was the feeling that the blower wasn't very strong. Changed the pollen filter as well (not pictures above) and that has made a significant improvement - the old one was properly black and full of leaves/insects.

Otherwise, I'm very very happy. Engine is spot on (and even better since the new oil/plugs). Rides well, handles well, very smooth. In fact...thinking about it now, it's probably too good to be used from a bangernomics point of view!

As promised here are some pics

Touring tool kit (think I'm missing the spark plug tool)
Image

Original (sealed) first aid kit and warning triangle.
Image

M52 2.8

So overall I'm delighted. Love the fact it is so original and unmolested. As mentioned, it's too good to run into the ground, we'll see how it goes.

Plans:
- Genuine Alpinas
- 16 inch (ideally style 32s) with winter tyres
- Keep the orange indicators
- HIDs but NO angel eyes
- Probably change the stereo at some point, OE is nice but ultimately not up to scratch
- Enjoy it!

Had the car in to have its waterpump changed (to a metal impeller equipped item).

Radiator was buggered at the bottom so they asked whether I wanted to replace it too. Nipped over to ECP and provided one with the 25% discount.

Total cost:
- Radiator 74.70
- Water hoses x2 16.38
- Metal impeller water pump 23.97
- Fanbelt and AC belt 17.79
- 1.5 hrs labour + coolant 90

Total cost: £222.84

Not bad imo given all the parts changed and work involved.

Also...

Touring practicality FTW!

Had the winter tyres delivered today.

I went for these Hankooks.

Image

I notice now out of stock. The more expensive 'V' rated variant are still available, didn't see the point tbh (despite the fact they should equal/exceed the car's top speed. I wasn't planning on driving >120mph in the snow.

Got them fitted to these (which I bought a couple of weeks back):
Image

Managed to get all 8 wheels in the back of the touring with room to spare. Nice :)

Plus I've just replaced the headlight switch bulb as per this write up.

Thanks all. :)

Winters with double spokes will probably be going on mid November (might have a bit of a Euro jaunt planned).

Also in the process of sorting out some genuine Alpina Softlines as everyone knows reps are for loserz!

@bigwinn - I know what you mean. Very difficult to find an unmolested example. Tourings are slightly more immune than coupes but a great many have been 'barried' to the max. :(

Minor update.

Last month took the car on a little jaunt to Berlin. 1694 miles, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Car cruised with no issues on the Autobahn at 100-110mph. Managed a top speed of sat nav confirmed 220km/h (137.5mph).

Image

As mentioned above, currently running on Hankook I*Cept Evo winter tyres, went for 205/55 R16s.

Felt stable and the ride is very very smooth after being on 17s. No issues at all in the cold, around Hamburg it was -1 during the day. Plenty of rain on the last day, not even the slightest hint of aquaplaning. Very happy with the tyres so far.

Not too shabby after only owning the car a couple of months.

One stickered addition. :!:

An update regarding snow/winters from last month:

Had been snowing since mid afternoon here in Colchester. By midnight/1am it had settled quite nicely (although not to a great depth) so thought it would be rude not to test out them out. As such, a late night/early morning jaunt to the local supermarket carparks was required.

Image

Impressions: very very impressed. (My reference point for snow driving is my E30 325i which I had on Kumho KU31s for the last couple of winters).

Drove on a combination of fresh snow and icy slush. Car had no problems getting started, the ASC rarely activated unless provoked. I was particularly impressed with how it stopped, really able to pull up with little bother/minimal slide. No problem with hilly sections either or roundabouts. I remember the E30 seemingly having a death wish always wanting the back end to come out so any corner would have to be dealt with tentatively but this was stable and very confidence inspiring - genuine night and day difference.

Coupled with good wet weather perfomance and no obvious increase in road noise on a day to day basis, I have to say I'm v impressed with the Hankooks. Not too shabby at all for only 60 odd quid per corner. More snow please :)

That looks great, I have a similar 328i touring myself but an auto SE model. I'm also a big fan of winter tyres, I run some Yoko W drive ones on mine, but fitted to 15in E46 wheels, as shown here:

Image

It was cold that day for dog walking...

Image

In summer I use the double spoke 16in wheels you have on yours and much prefer the look of them. :D

loved my old 328i touring, she was a nail having been a cat C write off in her life

Image

there was barely a straight panel on it. it went really well with the M50 inlet, M20 clutch/ flywheel and full alpina exhaust system.

Engine lives on in Winx's E30 track car now. 175k nikasil engine that didn't use hardly any oil

Having a sh!t one made me want a nice one hence when the B3 came about i jumped at it
