just been offered a large case lsd for nothing - prob is its 2.93, its in excellent condition - i will be running it with a 2.7 and a gearbox from a 325 sport. i can barely afford an open diff with all the bills for my conversion so if i can use thi diff i am one happy man! i know a 3.64 would be more desireable but i am hoping the 2,7 can pull it? what are yur thoughts?

that bad yeah? i mean i knew i'd need to be runnin a torquey motor to get it of the line but was hoping the 2.7 with 320 head bbtb 6branch would have the balls for it - at the moment i run a 320 with an open 4.1 diff - now i find the 320 sluggish of the line - i realise its hard to imagine these combinations but if you have experience you might know if it would be worse acceleration than what i have now?...

Hmmm this might be something the turbo boys are interested in, not me currently, but perhaps toby with his 335 turbo that is in process, where are you chap.
I think it would be asking a bit much of your 2.7, if its going for nothing or next to nothing i might be interested thats if you have no need for it of course.

This is a diff for a M50 conversion with 1:1 5th gear. Wouldn't suit a M20 gearbox at all.

twas e28 but the diff i am getting is from an e30 325es and i thought that had the same getrag box as was in the 325 sport? if it helps i could stay with my 320 gearbox but i doubt that would help.
i will try and trade it for a 3.25 or 3.64 diff but if i cant i guess i'll have to try it out for while
it cant be thant bad
i hope....

yea the 'es' had the ETA block, designed for low revs during a fuel crisis I think? Hence the ratio.
Personally, I wouldn't use it. Put it like this, I had a 4.10 diff and fitted a 3.91 - I noticed the change for sure. I'm thinking a 2.93 would allow a 316i out-accelerate you
Certainly worth something to someone else though, worth swapping or putting on ebay.

Sounds like the ultimate locker if the ration is right. If I was you mate, I'd take the one you have been offered for free, and then sell it (of if you don't want to piss of the person who has donated it run it for a while then take it out). A bit of extra cash for the car never goes amiss! The try and get the 325ix diff - I think it would be an ace mod.

thats probably what i'll do widge
do you really think it would be possible to use that viscous diff? is it just better than a regular diff or is it physically different do you think? i have no way of knowing if the ix diff would actually fit?.....

Form what I have read, it is exactly the same as anyother E30 diff casing wise. The Ix had another diff in the transferbox which split power 68% - 32% biased to the rear, and that was a viscous coupling too so presumibly they just wanted to be consistent. Also the sudden locking of the rear diff may have put extra strain on the transfer box etc.
I'd go for it mate - If you can get it. And if you decide you don't want it I'll take it off you

2.7 monster wount have any problems with the 2.97 diff either.
if anyone has driven a 525e or 2.7 e30 they will know what i mean.
The car has the torque to pull it... will also give more sensible rpm in top gear.
acceleration differences might suffer marginaly but will make it more driveable.
