Anyway, I've done some soldering, wire cutting, head scratching, more soldering etc, and finally come up with this:
Image

I've a couple more wires to go, a plug and a switch to find, a bit more soldering and some overbraid to pop on, but thank f*** (wiring's by far not my favorite thing in the world), this lot's plugged into my ECU, and a few other things.

There should be some nice shiney bits going on the car in the next week or two. winkeye

I'm after some 315mm rear discs to go on either E36 compact arms, or E30 arms with 1 series hubs... Any suggestions guys?

Cheers. Dave. :D

If you can,t find something off the shelf Hi spec or bg developments can do a custom set. Not too expensive either when you compare the cost of a set of 315 discs from bmw. I have a pair of used 315mm z3m discs foc if any good to you for measuring up etc.

Cheers Ajay! :thumb:
I *think* that the Z3M discs are the same as E36 M3 discs (I'll have a proper look tomorrow). I've been trying to find out whether an E36 M3 disc and hub combination would work with an E30 trailing arm (the bearing size is the same), but haven't had a lot of luck! They would need spacers to get the correct offset back, and some messing around to get the parking brake shoes to work (E36 are larger diameter), but it might be worth a shot!

I've sent a few e'mails out already regarding custom discs, I'll give Hi Spec and BG a shout in the morning. Thanks. :D If (when :? ) I get no joy from the e'mails, I'll give you a shout! 8)

Cheers! Dave. :D

Yeah sure dave, i know you can drop a hub/ caliper off at hi spec and they can make it work at whatever size you reqire. Your right about the e36 m3 disc i belive its the same as z3m, iv,e got a new pair going on mine so your welcome to the old ones (still ok) i should be taking the car up to james soon if it helps ill make sure there in the boot. I did see your car being worked on up there, WOW! I could not take my eyes off it. Realy good work mate, Inspiring!

Rear discs Z3 vs E36 are very different in offset..

It's worthwile checking e.g. EBC brake disc catalog, they've all the dimensions listed for all the discs => e.g. M-B has some good discs that can be fitted with small work ;)

Cheers Appletree. Yep, I can't wait to get some heat running through them! winkeye

Thanks for the rear brake options guys! I'm considering using the E36 318 complete set up which I have just for now. I'm utterly bored of looking at brake disc measurements!

I'd be interested to check out the Z discs Ajay, even if they're not going to fit! :-)

I've just been reading up on 318ti v E30 M3 rear arms. It appears that the E30 arms (or E30 M3 hubs pressed into E30 325 arms) give somewhere around 20mm narrower track than the ti set up... Can anyone confirm?

Anywho, as promised, here are some shiney bits.

I did a fairly poor drawing (I was in a hurry! :o: ):
Image

Which turned into a pair of these:
Image

So I fitted those to these:
Image

Bolted them here:
Image

Popped on these:
Image

And these. The wheels have been blasted and will have some gloss black paint, and some tyres on them soon. 8) :
Image

There's even some calipers hiding away there. winkeye

Cheers! Dave. :D

. I can confirm that the 318ti arm/hub assembly does give a wider track than the e30 m3 set up. When i was deciding what to use on the rear end of mine i had ti and m3 arms and was measuring up for wheel offset etc.20mm sound about right.

Thanks Will and Ajay. :thumb: You've both really helped.

I've been doing some more digging (when I'd much rather be working on the car  ). I was going to order a pair of E30 M3 rear flanges which would have pressed into my 325 bearings, but they're on back order and I want them quick! 120d flanges also use the same bearing size, but I'm buggered if I can find what offset they are. I'm tempted to take a punt and order some of these, along with a pair of 120d discs which are 300 x 20 mm and share the same handbrake shoe size (I'm sure I read this somewhere, but can't find where now!). They also appear to be just 1.5mm wider in overall width than E30 M3 discs.

Can you see any obvious reason why that won't work guys??!! 8O

Cheers!

In a perfect world, I'd have the car driving for this coming weekend for Santa Pod. It's looking less likely at the moment though! :? If the rear flange and disc combination (which I've ordered) doesn't work out, I think I'll get myself a set of 5 series 320mm discs and see how the hand brake shoes work out. If they don't, I have a plan. Anyway, hopefully, by Thursday I'll have forgotten all this and be laughing at how easy it all went on! :D (I've just bet myself a large sum of money that this won't happen. )

Aaaanyway, I fitted up the drivers side front suspension today, then fitted a "sport button", which alters throttle response:
Image

I also fitted the base plate for the electronic throttle pedal.
Image

The top bolt hole needed elongating to line up with the E30 mount. I should have a plug for the pedal assembly tomorrow so after a bit of soldering, I can slip the pedal on and tick that off the "to do" list. :)

I'll have to find something to fill the large hole in the dash where the sterio used to live at some point!

Cheers! :D

So, here's a pic of the E30 flange next to the 120d flange:
Image

Here's a pic of the E30 and 120d discs. They're both sitting on their respective hubs on a nice flat piece of aluminium:
Image

Not too bad eh! winkeye

There's a small lip on the inside of the 120d disc which protrudes inward onto the backing plate which I'll remove tomorrow. Apart from that, the hub fits, and the handbrake shoes line up just about perfectly! It looks like I owe myself a large sum of money!!
I'll get a couple more pics tomorrow which will hopefully explain better.

Oh yea, more snakey madness also happened!:

More to follow! :D

It was more of an edgeyoukaited guess with the hubs Will. I was sure that they wouldn't work! :chuckle:
I'll snap a couple more pics tomorrow of the lip that I was talking about. Funnily enough, it's pretty near a couple of mm deep! (This'll be you when you see the pics: :teehee: ) The actual drum part (less the lip) is recessed toward the outer face of the disc (as fitted) by that magic couple of mm. It'll make a bit more sense when you see the pics (and when I learn to string a decent sentance together!). :)

Anyhow, it's already tomorrow in NZ, so you've probably seen the photos already! :chuckle:

Here's the photo of the lip which I was talking about (way past the tomorrow that I was talking about! )
Image

Here it is after a bit of noise and some sparks. (I'll give it a proper finish grind before it goes back on :) )
Image

Some more noise, sparks and bright light has been happening, resulting in this:
Image

I've been under that back end of the car. I'll hopefully have a few more pics on the morrow. :D

I think I can vaguely see a tiny glimmer of light at the end of some sort of a tunnel!

Cheers Will. Yep, I guess the 1 series must have the discs a little more out-board than where they sit on the E30 arms. :)

I was going to get the car running/on the road, then build up a spare rear beam with toe/camber adjustment plates, and some braced rear arms which could be simply swapped over as and when. Seeing as the bearings didn't fare to well after removing the hub, and it seemed pointless to replace two sets, I thought I might as well get on with it now. So I did. :)

Here are the toe adjusters. (I forgot to take any pics before fitting  ):
Image

The bracing around the hub mounting has been done similarly about a million and fourty seven times before. You might also notice that one of the caliper mounts has been moved too. winkeye :
Image

Seeing as the HSD rear shocks use the standard spring mount location, the usual system of bracing with tube won't work. So, I cut out some of these:
Image

And welded them here:
Image

And here:
Image

And now they look like this:
Image

I also realised that I'd not taken a picture of my steering wheel. :) :

i did go different paths with my conversion but some of your stuff is pretty interesting and worth to think about. nice job!!

Hi Hellboy. :) Don't worry about interfering! It's interesting to see how others have got round problems. Left hand drive makes the brake servo more complicated for sure. :) I've been thinking about a strut brace. Yours looks good! Like a lot of things on these, clearance looks pretty tight. :D Cheers! :D

I've been under the back of the car again. I got hold of a set of Compomotive MO's a while back, 18 x 8 fronts, and 18 x 10 rears which James has given a coat of paint, and are fitted with 225/40, and 265/35 Federal RSR tyres. The rears were never going to be a straightforward fit, especially as the rear tyres are more like a 280 - 285 road tyre! 8O Anyway, the keener eyed of you might have noticed that a couple of inches of the trailing arm outer seams have been removed and welded forward of the hub. This gives clearance on the inner edge of the rim and tyre. The inner arch has recieved some fine tuning with the Irish spanner, and I've removed some material from the upper spring perch which fouled the inside of the rim with the suspension topped out. The final pieces of the jigsaw are the arches.
I've not really done much in the way of bodywork before, so it's been a bit of an adventure! winkeye Thanks James for help and advice! :D
Anyway, the wheel/tyre poked out a bit (fitted with a 5mm spacer):
Image

Here's the other side. Spot the difference. :) :
Image

It'll get a bit more attention, a thin skim of something and a drop of paint, but it's pretty much what shape I want it and it has tyre clearance!

That made me laugh Will! :chuckle:

The engine is not far off being as far back as it'll go without some work moving the steering rack/modifying the bulkhead Hellboy. :) I've got a sump guard which needs a couple of extra bends put in it for clearance, which I'll probably put it in the boot and take it to get bent when the car is running. I never planned on the suspension being super low, so hopefully ground clearance shouldn't be a huge problem. :) The headers should be on the car to stay in the next few days. I'll take a pic or two.

Cheers! D :D
