Which gaskets will need replacing? Also what other parts? If anyone has a full list of required parts that would be ideal - surely someone does?

If you're taking your head off, it's a good idea to replace the chain tensioner while you're there if you don't know its age.

To be honest I may as well do it while I'm in there, it is getting there.

Avoid cheap head gaskets. You want a proper BMW one or Elring/Reinz. Also buy the rubber profile gasket, inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets and a cam cover gasket set. The last three can be aftermarket.
With the front cover off, you may as well replace the chain (Febi / Jwis from a factors) and inspect the sprockets - they may be okay and they last well. I would replace the tensioner slipper blade and fit an M44 tensioner plunger. How far do you go with a 22 year old high mileage engine?
