And look at the bloody horror marks on these timing covers! Big bastard groves in them!

Bit of luck or good timing? This on the 325SE not my Sport!

:clin:

The belt was very slack and was trying to rub itself to bits! It has rubbed about 5mm off itself and looked more like a belt for an M40!

Bigup Boybimma again for doing this for me :D

Eek - close escape methinks!

Makes me *really* want to get round to finding out why mine's sounded funny since i changed it - I've got another belt & tensioner here but it's just jumped to the top of my list of priorities! 8O

Yep, along with a 24 valve head at the same time. BMW call them M50s.

Seen one or two like this. Usually caused by the shaft of an old type tensioner coming loose in its mounting bracket and not running parrallel to the other shafts.
Worst one I saw only had about half of the width of the belt left.

Quite possibly, loose idler shaft makes the belt run outwards.
Only way to be sure is to examine the old idler.
Side effect of the belt rubbing the cover, is that it destroys the fixings for the plastic guide that keeps the crank position sensor and oil pressure switch cables from destroying themselves on the water pump pulley.

The belt tension was far too loose, i fitted a new tensioner spring and all is ok. it was the loosest cambelt ive seen on a m20 and ive done a few.

I had a close call like that with my other M40 i had. Just bought the car, do the usuall service and bit's and found the tensioner had actually siezed and the belt was amazingly still on. Took it off and you could almost see through it, it was that fine, just strand's of what the belt was held together with 8O
